The Transfiguration

everything is sacred

Outtake of the Day #1641

I do this all the time. Jacob rarely does this; it’s only the formality of the camera that caused this little flub.

We are all liable to stumble on our words from time to time; either they’re reluctant to leave the lungs or fly out faster than you can think, and in either case just make a clumsy pile of failed communication sitting in the middle of the conversation. We have this odd tendency, though, to trip emphatically when we do stumble, to take the lapse in speech emphatically. It’s rather like walking on a hillside, tripping on a stray rock and throwing yourself down the slope, tumbling and laughing, as if you’d planned the whole thing. The fall is transformed into a sort of circus act, and much of the embarrassment dissipates as you laugh at yourself.

It’s a good way to do things. Enjoy your mistakes, embrace them, and then move on.

(I can’t share the final cut, of course – I wouldn’t want to give away Jacob’s shtick)
