Species of the Day #1648

Lampposts are trading their incandescence for phosphorescent glows, and as a result new species have begun to appear. These ones lack the sullen stare of your common craned-neck street light, and the welcoming gaze of the spherical lampposts; they are pretty, perhaps, but it’s strange to try to ascribe to them a new sort of personality. It’s almost as if they’ve been stripped to the spine, leaving nothing but the brain stem to keep the lamps on watch.

That’s perhaps a little more macabre than necessary.

This isn’t the only new species I’ve seen lately; others stand with a dozen LED eyes, staring straight ahead with an arthropodian countenance. They are alien things, less welcoming but still aesthetically intriguing. I cannot help but worry a little for the classical lampposts who have so diligently guarded the streets for the last century.
