Tail of the Day #1713

I accompanied Brian to his friend’s house this evening, where I met Rosie and Sveta, a dog and cat whom (I believe) both lived in less fortunate circumstances before they came to their new home. They’re both sweet and amicable creatures, comfortable with their new humans, but they each retain scars from their previous lives. Sveta, as you can see, is missing most of her tail; the resulting imbalance leads to a bit of amusement at her expensive when she misjudges a jump. Through the evening she kept pawing the door, gazing out, and walking away, only to return a few moments later. I wonder if she was looking for something, or if she just had a faint urge to step outside.

Sveta and Rosie both have stories locked away in their heads, and it seems a sad thought that these tales will never be told. I can’t know, even, whether they ever sit and remember what things were like before – though it’s certain that some experiences leave lasting marks on any animal’s disposition.

It’s so tricky to find the balance between identifying with an animal and anthropomorphizing her, and it’s hard to settle for how little we can know.
