Painting of the Day #1717

It would be nice, sometimes, to switch off your ability to identify objects, to remove the meaning from your visual field and just see the world for its shapes and colors. The night sky, still burnt from late sunset, was a deep orange, and the silhouettes of homes and telephone wires scratched against it as I biked home. The windows of meek houses hung like glowing portraits in a long hall, and were washed away in turn by trees and ivy. Next to a pavement laced with fluorescent shadows, new, thick, manicured grass was lush and green.

It seems about impossible just to stop yourself from reading words as they pass in front of your eyes; seeing the world for its basic forms may be even harder. Still, it’s a lovely painting we live in – I’m glad I’m here to see it.
