Star of the Day #1726

I went along with Alina and Kellen to karaoke tonight. They’re both rather soft-spoken, but when they sing they sound like entirely different people – as if a stranger’s spirit is locked away in their throats and only gets to reach out through song. Under smoke and lights everyone took turns singing to a crowded room, and always to applause. Kellen and Alina both sing well, but at these karaoke nights it seems that enthusiasm is valued more than anything else; anyone who sings whole-heartedly earns their fair share of cheer.

My favorite songs – or at least the ones I’d sing – are all a bit quiet, ill-fitted for karaoke in a loud bar, and that is my ostensible excuse for not stepping up as well tonight. Come live with me and hide around the corner in the morning, and perhaps you can catch me singing along to Sufjan Stevens or Andrew Bird sometime.

  1. Your dad used to have an awesome film of you singing while you went pee, your back to the camera, and then you turned around and saw the camera pointing at you, while you were just finishing your finale. Just sayin’.
