Internal Conflict of the Day #1758

I have to stop and commune with the squirrels whenever I meet them on my way home. If I were to keep walking, they’d likely ignore me and we’d just be any two passerby on the street, but when I stoop to greet them it piques their curiosity. This one struggled with two resulting forces guiding him – the drive to investigate and the urge for caution. He slinked close several times, always keeping just out of arms reach, hopped back a few paces, then came forward again.

Our gaze met, collided in the air; no sense of communication made it across the gap. But there’s something reassuring, almost, about being observed and considered by another species – it makes you feel more real.

stops my mind from wandering
