Return of the Day #1859

Anton was met with several hugs like this today, from Hannah, Leyla, Mitch and myself. I only managed to capture Hannah’s greeting, but Mitch practically carried Anton through the door mid-hug, and we all share his excitement – it’s good to see Anton back home, even if only for a short time.

I’ve been thinking lately that there are certain people in our lives who’ve acted as linchpins in our personal histories – people who are so influential, in one way or another, that our lives might be completely unrecognizable without them. I built little models in my mind to represent this – my life splayed out in a hanging mobile structure, with people pinned to branches in a descending tree of events. Pull out a certain person and everything they’ve effected falls away, sending the entire structure out of balance. It’s a very hypothetical thing to think about – what-ifs without answers – but it helps to appreciate certain things I might’ve overlooked otherwise.

Anyway, Anton is probably one of those linchpins for me. Life would be different without him, and I’m happy to see him again.
