Cookie of the Day #1876

Mitch, Leyla and Laurel managed to cobble together a small bonfire from found sticks and debris tonight, fighting off the cold fog that settled in. It was a bit of an ordeal, and once the flame was going we wondered what else we might have used as kindling. Tortilla chips, it turns out, burn very well: being mostly carbohydrate and oil, they might as well be a fire’s comfort food, and each lime-hinted chip we tossed in gave our circle a brilliant glow.

Oreos, meanwhile, are resilient things, and this one held fast against the heat almost as long as the firewood did. The charcoal-black cookie held its logo proudly even as it began to warp, Persistence-of-Memory style, and if you looked in the ashes tomorrow you might be able to find the shape of the Nabisco antenna hidden away.

We ate most of the food ourselves, of course, and those chips and cookies will fuel our own flames, but small sacrifices are worth it for the sake of experimentation, and to watch how carefully fire can sculpt its food as it burns.
