Quail of the Day #1913

Ecological forces have lead quails to evolve a more innocuous form in the last few millennia, but their ancestors were vicious and deceitful creatures, luring prey to their doom in the thick murk of night. Here’s a memorial to those angler quails, whose bioluminescent plumes hung like faeries in shadowy forests. Any curious animals who came near met a quick end, skewered by the bird’s needly teeth, hidden here by the harmless-looking beak.

Be wary if you are out looking for fireflies; one can’t know for sure if the angler quails are really and truly gone.
