Map of the Day #1962

Trees were our first mapmakers, feeling the earth through their roots and growing accordingly. Early adventurers would bring saws with them whenever they journeyed out into the unknown; lost in the mountains, they could fell a tree to find their way onwards. The woodgrains formed a natural topographic map, saving the lives of countless explorers – at the expense, sadly, of the tree’s life. Things are better now, since we have the all-seeing satellites to guide us home, but it’s important not to forget who helped us once upon a time.
