Cry of the Day #2010

with one comment

We’ve made our way to San Diego for the week, where Laurel is spending her final spring break with her family. This meant another leap into the clouds, another chance for perspective, and I was happy to get another glance at the world from up there.

At the Oakland airport there are several of these fellows singing by the entrance to the terminal – red-winged blackbirds, perhaps? They make a certain cry unlike anything else (as many birds are wont to do), and when they first caught my ears I was struck with an odd ethereal sensation until we found the source of the sound.

What an odd place for birds to thrive, full of traffic and rushing pedestrians and the incessant roar of our heavier, clumsier wings! I wonder if they learned this sound here, or if they brought it with them from far away.
