Lunch of the Day #2097

Here Michelle holds the fanciest toast I’ve ever seen, accompanied by the fanciest, most freshly-made cherry soda. The book is an old tome on mammals, full of lively descriptions, beautiful black-and-white photos and phylogenetic trees for every clade. This is par for any lunch with Michelle, and a fine way to meet up again after keeping her book for nearly a year. I ate kale and ricotta on Acme bread while she talked about her research, her cat and various oddities from the natural world, and we traded thoughts about what we wanted to do in the future.

When she was little, Michelle wanted to hide in trees and watch tigers all day, and that love has followed her to today. It may not be a realistic dream to be the Konrad Lorenz of megafauna, but she’ll find her footing in some realm of Kingdom Animalia, and she’ll be brilliant there.
