Troublemaker of the Day #2382

Laurel and I sat on her sofa tonight, watching Star Trek after dinner while Zinky darted in and out of the living room. My finished plate was perched on the edge of the coffee table, and after some hesitation Zinky took a delicate step onto it. Immediately the dish flipped over, splattering the sofa, the rug and the cat with sweet and sour dipping sauce; Zinky fled into the kitchen, and the two of us were left to repair the mess before Captain Picard could finish saving the day. Laurel, holding back a caffeine-deprived migraine, went to mop up Zinky’s sticky face, while I, heavy with far too much Thai food, collected remnants of my dinner from the floor.

It was the very picture of a harmless household incident, an archetypical midweek mishap. It could not have been more perfect; I felt, at the end of it, as if Laurel, Zinky and I had harmonized with thousands of strangers living identical stories across the planet.

These tiny disasters are important – bumps in the road to wake you up, to remind you where you are.

I don’t know why I don’t know why
