Shoulder of the Day #2411

The sun was enticing today and I had been indoors too long, so I went out planning to sit in the grass and continue reading up on Scala. I turned the corner and didn’t get much farther, because tiny flowers were blooming on spiraling spikes and little round planets, and every species of insect had come out to enjoy them.

I am still learning to use my macro lens, but I think I’m getting a bit better at handling it; just tracking a tiny subject can be tricky, and the depth of field is so shallow that it’s easier to focus by moving the camera than by adjusting the lens itself. The limbs upon which the insects foraged swayed in the breeze, and the insects themselves constantly crept round every side of their little worlds; all this made the process of taking photos a game of reflexes and timing and luck, just hoping to capture images in the fleeting instants when they became crisp.

The bees look like they are coated in brown sugar, or like they wear the thick fur of a bear, which seems appropriate in its own way.

I just want to be near you
