Mystery of the Day #2412

I’m not sure quite what compelled me to photograph these slices of zucchini tonight. It was only a single shot, a routine motion as if it were part of the recipe, taken in the middle of a conversation with Laurel: rinse, chop, oil the pan, light the burner, photograph, sauté. There was some particular moment of awareness of what I was doing, I think; an admiration for the gradient inside the zucchini, hidden from articulated thought by the conversation I was having, expressed through my camera because there was no other outlet for it.

Maybe. Perhaps that’s all nonsense.

But there are times when you see your life not as the present lived-in moment, but as a framed image, remembered instead of experienced, shimmering a little as if it were part of some small legend. That was the kind of feeling I think I had here, very fleetingly, and photographing it seemed like the thing to do.

Dinner was simple tonight – zucchini and gnocchi with pesto – but it was good to be there for it.
