Frontier of the Day #2492

Apart from a few visits to the vet and chaperoned trips to the park, Zinky’s world has mostly consisted of Laurel’s small apartment since she adopted him. Laurel worries about him jumping or falling from the windowsill if we let him onto it unattended, so for the most part the windows or the blinds are kept closed. Zinky shows his curiosity all the time, standing on his hind legs and peering through the blinds at whatever he can see outside, and we keep wishing he could have something more to see.

We decided to open the window and watch what he does with an open windowsill perch today. I stood outside to catch him if he happened to fall, while Laurel kept a close eye on him from indoors. He seemed enraptured with the outside world, wide eyes gazing at the little slice of sky between Laurel’s apartment and the one three steps from her window.

It seemed safe to let him sit there, so we sat down for breakfast while he explored the tiny branch of the universe that had just opened up to him. Every so often he would peer down, his shoulder blades poking out like mountains, and it seemed like he might just decide to jump after all. Each time this happened Laurel was momentarily terrified for him, so for the sake of her nerves – if not for Zinky himself – we pulled him back in and lowered the window again.

In our new apartment, Zinky will have windows to peer out and perhaps even a balcony to explore. I wish we could tell him about it – it’d be nice for him to have something to look forward to.
