Glow of the Day #2609

A new video game system has arrived at our home, so the night evaporated quite quickly. At ten o’clock, my phone reminded me to get ready for bed; I checked the time a moment later and it was well after eleven. That bodes well for the game, but I’ll certainly have to take care not to let it devour me.

The controller glows in different colors depending on what’s happening in the game. It’s totally unnecessary but a neat little detail – I’m looking forward to seeing what else there is to discover.

Bonfire of the Day #2911

Tonight’s splatfest pits roasted marshmallows against roasted hot dogs, and Laurel and I both are inclined to pick the sweeter side. We can’t build a fire in the apartment, but a few tea candles huddled together can roast you a good marshmallow – given a little patience. Let the sugar surface bubble a little, listen for the foom when it accidentally ignites, blow it out and keep going a little longer. There’s nothing quite like food pulled straight from the fire – take a bite and old memories will pour in.

Tunnel of the Day #2497

A tunnel of portals, given a little more texture from the dust and fingerprints reflected endlessly in them. These infinities always tilt towards green, and looking into them is like seeing redshift in distant galaxies, knowing you can derive from it deep secrets about the universe.

Lights like this will give a person the face of a poet about to tear open their heart for you, but that requires a direct perspective – a camera’s sidelong glance won’t deliver the full effect.

Drip of the Day #2396

With no photo to show for the day, I spent some time fiddling with the macro lens tonight, just before bed. The lens is more hungry for light than I anticipated; the LED flashlight I’d used for other cameras never quite satiated it, offering just a slow drip of photons to make tiny worlds apparent. I will have to arrange something a little more specialized than a flashlight or my bike light if I want to do some proper work with it.

This is a look directly into the eyes of the flashlight; note how the individual bulbs have developed scratches over the years, despite the protective shield they live under.

I am overdue for tomorrow, so that is that.

Spark of the Day #2385

I let a few moments slip by without photos today, but I will allow it for now. It’s important to have some null photos now and then.

With work and with the endless flow of media to consume and project ideas to realize, I think I have been overworking myself a bit, trying to cover as much mental ground as possible in spare moments. I cannot keep up with all the stories being created, nor can I follow through with everything I want to create myself, and it takes a conscious effort not to feel like I am losing a desperate race with the universe.

It’s okay – it’s important, even – to let most things go, to put them aside in favor of some nothing.

After the train ride home (on which I played a level of Mario and continued to read A Canticle For Leibowitz), I walked by the park, thinking of capturing some portals and reading a bit more before heading home. Instead I lay on the grass and, with my head low, watched the green blades extend to the horizon. A ladybug landed near me, as if the two of us were playing parts in a play, and carried out a series of leaps from blade to blade that I couldn’t understand. It was good to give a moment to that – no electronic puzzles to solve, no literature to parse, no conversation to dance through.

I’m continuing through this process of working out what parts of life I can strip away, what I can keep, and what I should give up on pursuing. In time I’ll be lighter and more aerodynamic, and I can almost feel it already.

Island of the Day #2335

Lampposts are there to keep the world anchored in place. After sunset the streets will melt away, trees will recede into shadow, strangers on the road will vanish into the dark, and soon enough it might seem like nothing exists at all; you become just a bundle of proprioception floating in the void.

Happily, we have these lampposts carefully planted across the planet, and their light holds fast to the things it can reach. Their islands stand firm in the sea of night, and as the sun rises the world can regrow from the pieces our lampposts protected.

Web of the Day #2269

The tree downtown is woven from wire instead of wood, and viewed from below it becomes a spider’s web, heavy with captured fireflies. I reached between the wires to get this shot, and managed to escape before any festive spiders arrived to devour me.

I was surprised to find Downtown Berkeley in a bit of a state of emergency; the police had closed off all but the main entrance to the Bart, and sirens seemed to flash down every street. Banks and restaurants were boarded up, their windows presumably smashed the night before; I’d passed by them just last evening, when they were all unbroken.

The protests going on right now are happening for an important reason, and I hope these voices are heard. The damage people are causing doesn’t serve their purpose, though.

But I’m glad people care enough to get out into the streets. How come I’m not there, too?
