Frame of the Day #2621

leave a comment »

Three months in to our stay here, we are nearly completely moved in. A few small details remain, including the stacks of framed illustrations that have been sitting neglected for far too long. Several of them finally made it onto the walls today including these flying koi. They flew on the wall of Laurel’s room when I first met her, and have always been a dreamy sort of thing to see from a distance.

Giving color to the walls like this makes it feel more like home.

Shield of the Day #2620

Jeff has one of those invincible old-fashioned mixing machines in his kitchen – the sort designed in the 50’s, built to survive the apocalypse. It made mixing our cookie dough more simple than I’ve ever known it to be; I’ve been making cookies with recipe since I was three or four years old, and it always took a long bout of wrestling with a bowl and wooden spoon to beat the dough into a smooth solution. The mechanical muscle of this thing gets the job done in just a few seconds. It felt a bit like cheating, but our delicious Charlie cookie came out just as well as we could have hoped for, so there’s no saying that machine-mixed cookies lack heart.

The mixer can be a little messy, though, so as the leaf-shaped beater spun around the bowl, Laurel and Jeff shielded the dough with their hands. Any stray bits fell to the ground, where Moose licked them up.

Afterwards we worked together with Jeff’s brother and Kristina to defuse bombs, and despite a few errant detonations we come out more or less triumphant.

It’s been a good night and we are up way too late, but this week is ours and we can enjoy it as we like.

Crew of the Day #2617

Friends in three phases today:

Nerf in the park with Emily, Anton, Jeff and some of Emily’s newer friends, where I played the role of castle and timekeeper, since I am still slightly too sick to be running around like mad.

Coraline and games with Matt, Barbie, Laurel and Ruth. The movie felt different to watch this time than when I first saw it, which just enforces the fact that I am a different person now. It is still good, and the needly fingers of the Other Mother are just as piercing.

Leftover pie with Alina and Bob, who came by late in the evening after attending a pizza party which may have also been a wake. It wasn’t on the way home for them; they just made an extra effort to come out and say hello to us, and I love them for it.

Things are good. I feel perhaps 98% better. To bed, now, and let’s all have some adventurous dreams tonight.

Journey of the Day #2615

Today went by on the sofa as I tried to fight off the bugs that have paid me a visit. It’s the sort of sick where you really can’t do much of anything at all, but fortunately I had Laurel here with me, and I watched her go through Journey twice.

Journey is a gorgeous game when you play alone, taking you through beautiful deserts with sparkling sands, but one of the best parts of it is the way it handles multiplayer. As you journey to the top of a distant mountain, you may occasionally run into other players who are at the same part of the adventure as you. Your only way of communicating is by creating little bubbles with a single rune; you don’t even know the other person’s name. There’s nothing that forces the two of you to stay together, though you do keep each other warm in the cold winds of the mountain.

For a game with such minimal communication, it does an amazing job of drawing people together, and if you stay with your companion through to the end it feels like you’ve made a friend. There’s something comforting about having a complete stranger come back to wait for you as you stumble over a few tricky jumps.

I will be getting to sleep soon, I think – hopefully I’ll be strong again in the morning.

I woke up this morning with a vague suspicion that I might be getting sick, and after I came home early from work I determined it was indeed so. My head is somewhat inflated and speaking is a little difficult, but Laurel is here to help. She made a delicious soup for us from scratch, and with its help I will return to full strength soon.

I’m lucky to have her here.

Commute of the Day #2612

Pearce and I board at different stations, but we often end up riding the same car of the same train on the way to work. Usually he catches up in his journal as he rides, while I’ve been writing for NaNoWriMo; today we just sat together and talked, which is at least as good. Pearce is working on music mixing again, which is a subtle art – manipulating multiple layers of a song to they sound good together while still maintaining an organic feel.

The days are busy – it’s good to have rides like these to keep caught up with friends.

Trolley of the Day # 2611

Trolley of the Day #2611

Today we went out on the incredibly domestic quest to replace our burnt-out microwave. We’ve gone shopping for household goods together before, but that was to build out our home together as a whole, which was something new and exciting; hunting down a single appliance in particular makes it feel like we’re a part of the American couple archetype now, which is a little peculiar.

While we were out at the store that didn’t have any good microwaves, Laurel decided to hop into the shopping cart with her Icee and ride around a while. It was more fun for me than an empty cart would have been, and certainly more for her; the steady rolling texture of the cart wheels against the linoleum must spark some old memories of trips to the grocery store with her parents.

Laurel said some of the customers were giving us dirty looks as we went around the store, but I didn’t notice any. I always miss that sort of social discomfort, which is probably a blessing.

We have our new machine and a few other little things for the house, and we just about met our goals for the day. Laurel is sleeping; I should be too.
