Laser Light Cannon of the Day #2619

Day_2619

A Laser Light Cannon grows in our back alley, waiting to defend our planet from whatever villains might descend from the sky. I passed it several times over the course of the day as we whittled down a mountain of dirty laundry that’s accumulated over the last couple weeks.

Laurel received a rejection email from the company she interviewed at on Friday. She was really excited about working there, and from her conversations with them it seemed like they were also really excited about her joining them as well, so it seemed like getting the ∆ob offer would only be a formality. The email was a typical featureless rejection, a thank-you-for-your-time without any explanation. After things seemed to be going so well, I think Laurel felt betrayed.

To keep her mind off things, we watched a lot of cartoons today – the same ones we’ve been watching for about as long as we’ve been together. They’ve both gotten to rather intense parts in the story, so we had lots of adventures to go through together this evening.

Laurel has a meeting about another job tomorrow. I hope this one gives her what she wants.

Direction of the Day #2556

Our new apartment is on the other side of the station, so where I previously walked with the sun at my back in the morning and afternoon, I now walk with it ahead of me. This effects a change in the flavor of my commute: the light is always filtering toward me, trees and grasses aglow, streets shining in the low sun; I am heading toward the sun as if it were a treasure to be sought, rather than a wildfire to flee. The effect will grow stronger as the seasons change, the sun sinking lower until I make my commute in the dark.

Tonight is the end of my seventh year of this project, but I made an off-by-one error and expected the holiday to fall tomorrow. I will have to post the review video a day late – I hope you don’t mind.

Still I’ll keep it going, ever onwards, with so many chances to stop and look back.

Field of the Day #2526

The field outside our back door is sprinkled with tiny pink flowers, but only at the edges; the center of the field is a colorless desert. Still it’s lovely to look out at them at the end of the day, when the light has sunk northward.

I wonder how the light here changes over the course of a year. We have a tiny climate to explore here – just moving a few blocks put us in a different ecosystem.

Pollinator of the Day #2508

The newest lens to ride in my pocket weighs a little heavily, but it does a fine job at peering at close things, which is what’s important.

The sun was tasty on the way back this afternoon, and when I stooped to look closer at these tiny flowers, I found that someone else had discovered them as well. She explores them in a different dimension than I do, something rich in chemical sculptures, and she can immerse herself in the bouquet much more fully than I can.

I get to admire her iridescent sheen and the crimson of her eyes, as well, though, so I am happy with my lot.

Photo of the Day #2506

The way things are now, Laurel and I often spend half the day at her apartment and half at mine, using the split household as an excuse to go outside for a bit when we’re feeling otherwise lazy. The walk to my place this afternoon was breezy and warm, and the trees whispered to us the whole way. On the way back to Laurel’s tonight, the wind had settled down and left the world cooler, and we walked beneath silent trees that caught the stark streetlight in their eerie ways.

I love them like this. They are almost like parchment, with messages written in their bark and in their silhouettes, and the leaves are crowding in to read their stories.

Photo of the Day #2489

The evening didn’t go as we would have liked, but the trees are still out there, catching the wind and standing against the nightlit clouds in their weepy way. Laurel is sleeping at my place on a mountain of mattresses, which is unusual for us, but we may sleep well after all.

Good night, and take care of yourself.

Layers of the Day #2487

When I stopped to consider these branches for a photo, their needles melded together to become broad leaves, and I was a tiny insect looking up from the soil. It was the sort of change in scale that so often I wish I could really see – small things turned into worlds. Looking up with my own eyes, just a person on the street, doesn’t quite capture the illusion, since my vision stretches out into the sky and the electric wires and the rest of the neighborhood; restricting the world to a rectangle with my camera made me smaller.

Just a reminder to myself – I can see things differently when I look at them through my camera.
