Battlecry of the Day #2573

The bananas at work are all predisposed toward anarchy; leave one alone for a moment and it will brew up some sort of propaganda as soon as it starts to ripen. Mine are not the only ones to do this, but I haven’t seen any of the others in person. It seems appropriate to catalogue them as they appear, to give a fair representation of this nearly-invisible war, so the history books can tell an honest story a few decades from now.

Revolutionary of the Day #2560

I stepped away from my desk sometime yesterday and returned to find that my banana had joined the rebel forces. Tattooed with a cry for freedom, it meant to fight alongside so many others for the good of the people.

This rebellion has been quelled, but I had to at least take one last photo for the history books before I ate this soldier for breakfast.

Leaf of the Day #2421

What a strange thing that the leaves should learn to speak in order to ask for privacy. Finding a message like this, formed with specially adapted pigments, is such a novel discovery that we ignore the message in order to marvel at it.

For its sake I will keep the leaf’s location a secret, but it may well have been stolen away by botanical psychologists after we left it behind.

Dragon of the Day #2415

I walked through a nearby but unfamiliar neighborhood this afternoon, and was so happy to be out – walking in the sun, surrounded by green, the sound of wind chimes and birds and whispering trees filling the air, traffic and airplanes passing in the distance.

This dragon guards one of the homes I passed, flying fierce with his many claws under flowery vines. The gate to the house is painted as well, and the upper point of the house, where the wall meets the two sides of the roof, was adorned with a carved sun and moon. It seemed like a place that was lived in and loved, and felt like a place where friends live.

I want to live in a home with a dragon.

Brand of the Day #2410

I came home this morning after a few nights away, and found an assortment of Pearce’s fruits on the kitchen counter. My own bananas have been living there a while, so Pearce branded his own to differentiate them, each one of the bunch sporting a dark P etched into the skin.

I like the indirect forms of communication that arise between two people who live in the same space at different times. I’m often at Laurel’s and Pearce is often at Brittany’s; Pearce and I see each other here a bit more than we used to, but when we don’t it’s still nice to come home and see little human signs that acknowledge that we both live here.

Collaboration of the Day #2402

Laurel and her parents used to play a game when she was small: with a finger they would draw a picture on her back, and she would have to guess what it was. We tried this tonight, taking turns as artist and canvas. Some things were instantly recognized – Laurel caught my jellyfish, I caught her cat. Other images completely eluded me, so I drew what I had imagined to show her the lapse in communication. She went ahead and embellished them, making creatures out of our abstract shapes, and so we have our artistic collaboration for the evening.

It’s been a lovely night.

Data Cluster of the Day #2273

I’ve been working at my new job for only two weeks now, but we’re already moving to a new space – the floor above, with higher ceilings and a better view of the city. To record a bit of history before leaving, we all marked our height on one of the walls. The floor will be remodeled soon, and most likely everything will be painted over; perhaps these lines will stay hidden under the new coat.

People often call me tall, but I’m used to seeing things from my particular vantage point; I tend to forget about my height unless someone calls it out.

You can’t argue with the statistics, though. I’m a total outlier.

Work has only just started, but I’ve been having a good time. My first bits of code are in the product now – I’m finally building something with people.
