Nest of the Day #2616

One more day of recovery. Laurel’s was more adventurous; she left early this morning for a job interview (which went well, but we’re waiting on a decision) and went out this evening for an R-themed costume party. After she spent some time mulling over options to no avail, I suggested she use the felt drops that Anna made me so she could go as a raincloud. These safety pins fastened the rain to her arms, though I failed to capture the costume in all its majesty.

I have had enough of all this nothing-doing. Tomorrow, I hope, I’ll be much better.

Journey of the Day #2615

Today went by on the sofa as I tried to fight off the bugs that have paid me a visit. It’s the sort of sick where you really can’t do much of anything at all, but fortunately I had Laurel here with me, and I watched her go through Journey twice.

Journey is a gorgeous game when you play alone, taking you through beautiful deserts with sparkling sands, but one of the best parts of it is the way it handles multiplayer. As you journey to the top of a distant mountain, you may occasionally run into other players who are at the same part of the adventure as you. Your only way of communicating is by creating little bubbles with a single rune; you don’t even know the other person’s name. There’s nothing that forces the two of you to stay together, though you do keep each other warm in the cold winds of the mountain.

For a game with such minimal communication, it does an amazing job of drawing people together, and if you stay with your companion through to the end it feels like you’ve made a friend. There’s something comforting about having a complete stranger come back to wait for you as you stumble over a few tricky jumps.

I will be getting to sleep soon, I think – hopefully I’ll be strong again in the morning.

I woke up this morning with a vague suspicion that I might be getting sick, and after I came home early from work I determined it was indeed so. My head is somewhat inflated and speaking is a little difficult, but Laurel is here to help. She made a delicious soup for us from scratch, and with its help I will return to full strength soon.

I’m lucky to have her here.

Game of the Day #2613

Xiao and Danny broke from work to play this old game, passed down through generations of school children: one person places their hands under the other’s, like so, and tries to pull their hands out and slap the top of their opponents hands before they react. If an attempted slap misses, the other person gets a turn to attack. It’s a game of reading your opponent and second-guessing yourself, and one of the many memes that somehow became ubiquitous before the growth of the Internet.

I took photos, hoping to catch one of the slaps, and the Googlebrain stitched together all those moments into a jittery motion. I rather like it, though – these two were so happy as they were playing this game.

Commute of the Day #2612

Pearce and I board at different stations, but we often end up riding the same car of the same train on the way to work. Usually he catches up in his journal as he rides, while I’ve been writing for NaNoWriMo; today we just sat together and talked, which is at least as good. Pearce is working on music mixing again, which is a subtle art – manipulating multiple layers of a song to they sound good together while still maintaining an organic feel.

The days are busy – it’s good to have rides like these to keep caught up with friends.

Trolley of the Day # 2611

Trolley of the Day #2611

Today we went out on the incredibly domestic quest to replace our burnt-out microwave. We’ve gone shopping for household goods together before, but that was to build out our home together as a whole, which was something new and exciting; hunting down a single appliance in particular makes it feel like we’re a part of the American couple archetype now, which is a little peculiar.

While we were out at the store that didn’t have any good microwaves, Laurel decided to hop into the shopping cart with her Icee and ride around a while. It was more fun for me than an empty cart would have been, and certainly more for her; the steady rolling texture of the cart wheels against the linoleum must spark some old memories of trips to the grocery store with her parents.

Laurel said some of the customers were giving us dirty looks as we went around the store, but I didn’t notice any. I always miss that sort of social discomfort, which is probably a blessing.

We have our new machine and a few other little things for the house, and we just about met our goals for the day. Laurel is sleeping; I should be too.

Photo of the Day #2610

We’ve gotten to hosting people here pretty consistently, and often a different group of friends each time. It feels like coming out of a drought, actually being able to have some fun with people instead of just catching up. We were planning for Kyle, Renée, Jeff and Kristina to join us tonight, and Bob and Alina happened to stop by early as well – bonus hangouts!

It is a little ridiculous how everyone is coupled up, but perhaps that is the way of things as we get older. We played a trivia game and split into teams, and of course were paired with our respective lovelies. Next time, perhaps, we should shift to other groups, because it is a it little strange to interact with friends exclusively as paired units like that. It’s important, still, to get to know everyone individually.

A good night here, and hopefully many more to come.
