Bash of the Day #2596

I first met Laurel three years ago, at one of the bolder Hellaween parties over at the haus. Since then we’ve become much more inclined toward mellow events, and had just three friends over tonight for our tiny Halloween party.

Over the course of any Halloween, people will shed the less comfortable parts of their costume, slowly turning back into themselves. Laurel, who made herself into Marceline the Vampire Queen, abandoned the fang, black hair and sun hat when we migrated to the sofa; Alina was a classical sort of witch, but doffed the black hat when she came in. Ruth experimented with Pippy Longstocking pigtails, but the wire wouldn’t quite stay put. In this shot only Bob is still entirely Someone Else – a shepherd from a time long before sheep.

With a great deal of Laurel’s help I became Wirt, and in order to explain the costume we watched Over the Garden Wall with everyone. The music is still in my head – it’s a good way to end the night.

Tradition of the Day #2582

This is the first time we’ve carved pumpkins with Alina and Bob, but Laurel said – before we’d even picked out the pumpkins – that she wanted it to become a tradition. Four work of art now sit on our kitchen table, staring out the window, so I think we are off to a fine start.

I have carved my fair share of pumpkins in the past, but I think I was always reluctant to commit to the whole messy process of cutting open and gutting the fruit. Those reservations seem to have melted away, and after some deliberation over what my pumpkin’s face should be, I was able to carve it into a proper little monster.

We’ve had pumpkin pie and pumpkin ice cream and pumpkin candles here for a few weeks now, but tonight the apartment smells like actual pumpkin, and it’s lovely.

Game of the Day #2913

These water-pressure based games are an ancient and venerated technology, presenting a simple but impossible challenge: squeeze the water-buttons just the right way to sink the tiny plastic balls into the hoop. The currents inside the device are chaotic; there is no sensing or predicting them, and coaxing them to flow the way you need them to is a dark art, like drawing secrets from a ouija board or bending silverware with your mind. Alina quickly mastered the game, of course.

We watched a few episodes of Human Planet today – tales from around the world of people living in extremely inhospitable conditions, in ice and desert and the open ocean, straining for survival in everything they do. We started with popcorn and root beer floats, and ordered pizza partway through; I am dizzied and a little guilty about how different our lives are.

From this vantage point, though, we are afforded a glimpse of life everywhere else, which others don’t get, and that is very much something to be thankful for.

Walk of the Day #2462

At the end of the night, after games and snacks and a strangely dramatized nature documentary with Stephen Fry, the four of us headed Bartward to close out the evening. Alina and Bob boarded their train, while Laurel and I continued on to reach her apartment.

I woke up last night when, for the second time, I accidentally knocked over a glass of water with my pillow. My dreams were somewhat overclocked at the time, so the sudden jolt into waking life was especially jarring. What a strange thing to have recur – I will have to sleep more gently from here on out.

Intrigue of the Day #2455

Friends on the sofa with piles of snacks, all trying to work out the riddle we’ve created for one another. We played a game of Things following Porco Rosso tonight, and I got to see more more of these wonderful people here – time with them has been all too rare lately.

We are all tired, but fortunately the week is over. Laurel’s drifted off, so I will drift as well.

Photo of the Day #2295

Alina wanted to take some cheesy photos before leaving Rosie’s today, so we had a whole round of it, using three different cameras until people were almost sick of posing.

These visits are so rare now, and today’s was so short. Arrangements with friends have been a matter of rationing time, as if we were going through some sort of temporal famine; we can only be together so briefly before going off to the next obligation for the day.

I suppose this is a common thing as you get older, getting to know more people and finding more interests. You can’t find time for everyone, and if you try to make it you stretch yourself thin.

Sam was in town this week, and I forgot to get back to him about meeting him in San Francisco yesterday. I need to remember to apologize, at least.

Busy, busy, busy.

Uke of the Day #2184

Uke of the Day #2184

Alina is leaving soon to begin her PhD program at UCSC. Time has been so tight that I haven’t seen her at all in the last month, but I had to make it out at least today, for the second phase of her going-away party. Laurel brought her baritone ukulele, which Alina approached with the same curiosity she has for every kind of instrument.

I haven’t heard Alina’s hurdy-gurdy in quite a while – it would be nice to be audience to one of her jam sessions again. Perhaps when she’s become a Doctor, I’ll have learned to play as well, and I can join in with her.

It’s a good Someday to keep in mind.
