Transplant of the Day #1915

My bicycle’s been suffering from a frayed tendon, so I once again went to the Dactyls for help. Together Barb and Bob worked out how to dismantle the controls and tease out the split cable, replacing it with one of the many spares they’ve accumulated over the years. This all went along smoothly enough until it came time to attach the new cable to the derailleur – the mechanism that actually shifts the chain from one gear to another. Mine is a curious model, and the way it wobbled made us wonder if it might be broken in some obscure way.

I’ll need to find a second opinion, but my bike is still in better health now than it was this morning, and I’m certainly grateful for that.

I don’t see Bob and Barb very often anymore, and I feel a little guilty that I mostly reach out to them when I have bicycle trouble. Conversely, it’s almost a nice thing when my bike does start limping like this – it means I get to go visit them again.

I’ll write you a song

Kitten of the Day #1827

Kitten of the Day #1827

The fountain of kittens is ever-flowing, and the time has come again to see the new litter growing at the Dactyl household. Black with hints of silver, they came to the house starved and frail, but Barb has expertly raised them into warm and healthy creatures. In time they’ll all go on to find good homes, and the cycle will repeat once again.

At about three weeks old, these kittens are strong and lucid enough to wander around the room, but not quite coordinated enough to do any serious scampering. Their feet splay a little when the walk, and slight imbalances can send them stumbling sideways. In another week or two they’re sure to be chasing each other across the room, and then there will be no stopping them, but this period between slug and wildling is wonderfully awkward.

The light in this room is often diffuse, with only indirect sun streaming through the window, so they may not even know their own shadows yet. The world has a lot of surprises waiting for them.

Reassembly of the Day #1721

Reassembly of the Day #1721

The wonderful people of the Dactyl household, well acquainted with the intricacies of bicycle machinery, collaborated today to perform surgery on my misbehaving gears. With grease-blackened fingers and obscure tools they dismantled the rear clockwork, gear by gear, and wiped away the dust and debris that I’d accumulated over many miles. Thanks to their hard work, my wheel is spinning smoothly and tickering happily, and perhaps I’ve gained a modicum of mechanical knowledge as well.

A new batch of kittens is nearly grown and ready to meet their futures, and I spent some time with them as well before heading home. Photos from our encounter are posted here. Barb chronicles the development of her many fostered kittens there – prologues to many lives scattered cross the city – so do take a look.

It’s always nice to see the Dactyls again.

Picnic of the Day #1414

Myles lent me his camera today, but it grew frightened in the arms of the tree, so my phone captured this view. My experience with Tree 9 trained me well for this ascent, though the prevalence of sap and lichen was something new. Though the day began cold and grey, a swift wind carried away the clouds, and I swayed with the trees as the sky transformed.

Rosie organized this lovely picnic, bringing together friends who have been scattered too far apart for too long.

These are people who are good to each other, who have known each other for a long time, and it was wonderful to spend time with them today. I hope more such gatherings are forthcoming.

And tonight we have landed new eyes on Mars. The planning and delicate work involved in getting there safely are phenomenal, and I am so proud of these accomplishments humanity has made. The universe is waiting for us to solve it.

Hitch of the Day #1173

with one comment

Some kind strangers gave Emily, her mom and me a ride back downtown tonight after Emily’s Russian concert. The stranger we shared the bus stop with got a ride before us, and shortly after we left Pearce got a ride back as well. It’s wonderful how many generous people are out there. I’m sure their hearts were stirred by the especially cold weather; they could not stand to pass us by and imagine us freezing to death, waiting for a bus that would never come.

If we’d brought towels, I’m sure we would have secured a ride even sooner. We really should be more prepared.

Laugh of the Day #1158

To put it simply, these are people whom I like very much, and it makes me happy to see them smiling together. I want to just leave this as a sight to look back on and let it be. Ten years from now this photo might make sentimental hairline cracks run through my heart, and it will be worth it.

For now, it’s time to sleep.

Kitten of the Day #832

This may be the last you see of Mary, since I’ll be going back to Santa Cruz on Monday, and when I return she will have hopefully moved to her permanent home. She’s doing very well – she scrambles to the door when she hears someone coming, pokes in and out of cardboard boxes, plays patty cake, tries to nibble fingers (though we mustn’t let her) and goes to sleep very gently after she’s burned off all her energy. It’s a relief to see her so healthy. Wish her a good life!

The internet here is outright dead, so this post will be going up late as well – but, keeping to my rules, I’m writing this before bed. Emily is snoozing away beside me already, and I’m ready to join her.

We didn’t leave the house today, and not having any internet access was very strange. I’m used to talking with my friends online every day, and having that connection cut off while hiding from the outside world felt rather like being snowed in. With books and games and one another – and food and water, of course – we could last for quite a while and still be well, I think.
