Jam of the Day #1012

Brittany has gone home for the summer, Eric is off somewhere far away and Ayden’s life has been a bit chaotic recently, so Emily and Rob are all that remain of Beggar and the Coal for now. They remain resilient and their music is still beautiful, though, so the soul of these songs will live on.

Rob will sit with his guitar during a conversation and let his fingers wander through his songs while he talks. Whatever the subject, every now and then a chord might ring out and it’s almost as if the color of the air changes for a few moments, reminding us what else is available to us on the emotional spectrum.

It’s been almost two years now since I met Rob. I can’t believe time moves so quickly.

Band of the Day #979

I am nearly too tired to form coherent sentences, but here is more of Beggar and the Coal, posing in front of several photographers for a group shot after their show. They performed on campus at 11 o’clock this morning, singing from a stage nestled between two dorm buildings, and so a hundred or so people probably woke up to their music. A good way to start a long weekend, I think.

Just look how happy they all are! Look at Rob – you can really tell how much he appreciates the band.

Sigh of the Day #978

with one comment

I don’t know if I have a weak form of synesthesia or if my friends just have supernatural musical abilities, but when I sit around while they play their songs it seems very much as though they’re filling the air with color. I can’t literally see it with my eyes, but I feel it, like pastel swirls hidden behind the atmosphere. It’s a remarkable feeling to walk up the stairs and find them practicing, the song growing stronger with each step, and to enter the room and see them all smiling there as the song shakes the house.

The kitchen seems like a good place to make music, and I’d like to get videos of them performing in other places – in the forest, maybe, and definitely in a stairwell, or downtown. . .

I wonder what these folks are going to think of this song in twenty years. It’ll be a good thing to look back on.

Band of the Day #964

Beggar and the Coal performed live on the radio this evening, sending their mellow melodies gliding across the skies. Here they are (minus a fiddler) posing for a traditional radio station guest photo, and I love to see them happy.

I walked by the college radio station every day last year, but I never once went inside, and it was a strange experience going in today. As you say, the walls are absolutely filled with music of all sorts, of every genre and from everywhere in the world, on vinyl and CD and perhaps even hidden away digitally somewhere. While these four charming people were at the station on business and three others had come to document the broadcast, I was there just as a friend (and my camera was diminutive next to the huge Canons that others had brought), and wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself, or if it was okay to be there. Everyone else had a place and a role, from the radio host whose voice fit so well to the slightly unconfident manager in the sweater vest, and I couldn’t do much of anything aside from wait for the show to start.

My worries vanished when the show started, though, and all the station members wandered to the recording room doorway to watch the musicians play. They were curious and excited for the show like I was, and I was able to listen beside them, trading grins now and then.

I’m sorry I didn’t give warning before the show, because you could have listened in during the broadcast. We do have a recording, though, so if anyone is interested I would be happy to get a copy to you. I hope the full band can get together for a proper recording before the year ends – I don’t want to leave their songs behind.
