Beat of the Day #2309

Beat in the sense of a script, those small pauses written in between lines of dialogue for dramatic flow, no longer than a single beat of the heart.

I’ll take these photos mid-conversation when I feel that a more photogenic moment won’t happen later on its own, and it stops the moment – at least a little. There’s no dramatic flow to my camera coming out, I still need it to play a part.

Even these small photos help, though. A year ago today, Ben and I went to get the Waffle of the Day, and it happened again this year. This time we were fortunate to have Anton along as well.

Ben’s gone away again, and the rest of his weekend will be quite the party. With any luck, he’ll be coming back again before too long, and stop these days from being merely an annual tradition.

Photo of the Day #2308

Ben was here a year ago today, after visiting almost exactly two years before – rather like Anna’s recent appearance. This spontaneous calendar of holidays is forming, a few important points in time linking up.

Time is nothing, though – the past year might as well not have existed, as we just picked up where we left off.

We are both a bit more tired than last year, though, waking up earlier than we used to. That doesn’t mean we’re getting old, does it?

I won’t be vacant anymore

Dedede of the Day #1997

A package from Ben arrived in the mail today, and he closed his letter with this Dededoodle. I talk to Ben online, but his handwriting and the lines of King Dedede here have a certain voice to them – a physicality lost in pixels. Is it odd, then, that I chose to preserve his drawing digitally?

I think I accrued some serious sleep debt over the weekend – it may take some time to pay for it.

my mind has a mind of its own

Fez of the Day #1943

It’s been almost exactly two years since Ben last visited, and he’s in Berkeley only until tomorrow morning, but it’s important to have these check-ins now when we can.

Lots and lots of games today, with tasty burgers and an unfortunate absence of pizza. Hopefully it won’t be another two years before we see Ben again.

you always do this

Mountain of the Day #1209

with one comment

Anton and Ben drove down to Santa Cruz for a game session tonight. Ben flew in from Austin for a convention, and half of his luggage was devoted to board games; he takes his play seriously. Andrew joined us to make a quartet, and we tried out two new games Ben discovered in far off lands. Andrew here is trying to reconfigure the mountain so his yellow climber can ascend, while Anton and I stand highest on opposing peaks. Something about reshaping a mountain while climbing it with friends seems very dreamlike, and I would like it very much if there were some way to really do that.

I don’t get to see Ben and Anton very much anymore, and while my housemates here are good company they aren’t much into games, so this was really nice tonight. I’m doing good things in college, and my friends are all growing and finding themselves in the world, but I miss when we could meet every weekend (or whenever we felt like it, really) and just play games for hours and hours. These rare nights now are almost a memorial to that; I hope we’ll still have them in the future.

didn’t I, my dear

Challenge of the Day #1045

. The joy of a claw machine prize is in knowing that you earned it; candy tastes better when you’ve fought for it. And so, despite the fact that we could easily buy an unreasonable amount of candy from the grocery store, Ben stopped to make an attempt at this game. Here he’s taking a second perspective of the battlefield, making certain that the claw is perfectly aligned with that one vulnerable Butterfinger.

Sadly, the claw was not as enthusiastic about the candy as Ben was, and grasped it with a limp wrist. The machine burned away three dollars and fifty cents and never gave up a prize.

But you pay for more than candy when you play one of these games. It’s a battle against futility; a win means bragging rights and candy, and a loss lets you bask in the humor of the whole thing. The machine actually ate two quarters, but none of it was wasted money – we built a memory out of it.

Later on, Ben won a raffle at the Rocking Tomato – ten dollars in pizza or pizza-related foods – so he turned a profit today overall. I don’t think he felt too bad about it.

it’s been a long time, love

Cake of the Day #1043

leave a comment »

This is the first bite Ben took of his birthday cake, and though it may not look like it he enjoyed it quite a bit. He can eat food analytically (which is something beyond me – I enjoyed IHOP pancakes like a philistine, while he can’t abide such loveless pastries), so he was certainly considering the food carefully while it ate. The cake, an experiment in parfait, was baked by one of Ben’s new Texas friends. It contained some of Ben’s favorite cookies, both embedded in the cake and crushed on top – a thoughtful gesture, I would say. I was worried when Ben moved away that he would be a bit lonely here, but he seems to have made some good friends.

Ben turned 22 today. I met him when we were, I think, six years old (though our mothers apparently met in the hospital), so that’s sixteen years that we’ve been friends.

And it has been a good sixteen years.
