Transplant of the Day #1915

My bicycle’s been suffering from a frayed tendon, so I once again went to the Dactyls for help. Together Barb and Bob worked out how to dismantle the controls and tease out the split cable, replacing it with one of the many spares they’ve accumulated over the years. This all went along smoothly enough until it came time to attach the new cable to the derailleur – the mechanism that actually shifts the chain from one gear to another. Mine is a curious model, and the way it wobbled made us wonder if it might be broken in some obscure way.

I’ll need to find a second opinion, but my bike is still in better health now than it was this morning, and I’m certainly grateful for that.

I don’t see Bob and Barb very often anymore, and I feel a little guilty that I mostly reach out to them when I have bicycle trouble. Conversely, it’s almost a nice thing when my bike does start limping like this – it means I get to go visit them again.

I’ll write you a song

Reassembly of the Day #1721

Reassembly of the Day #1721

The wonderful people of the Dactyl household, well acquainted with the intricacies of bicycle machinery, collaborated today to perform surgery on my misbehaving gears. With grease-blackened fingers and obscure tools they dismantled the rear clockwork, gear by gear, and wiped away the dust and debris that I’d accumulated over many miles. Thanks to their hard work, my wheel is spinning smoothly and tickering happily, and perhaps I’ve gained a modicum of mechanical knowledge as well.

A new batch of kittens is nearly grown and ready to meet their futures, and I spent some time with them as well before heading home. Photos from our encounter are posted here. Barb chronicles the development of her many fostered kittens there – prologues to many lives scattered cross the city – so do take a look.

It’s always nice to see the Dactyls again.

Picnic of the Day #1414

leave a comment »

Myles lent me his camera today, but it grew frightened in the arms of the tree, so my phone captured this view. My experience with Tree 9 trained me well for this ascent, though the prevalence of sap and lichen was something new. Though the day began cold and grey, a swift wind carried away the clouds, and I swayed with the trees as the sky transformed.

Rosie organized this lovely picnic, bringing together friends who have been scattered too far apart for too long.

These are people who are good to each other, who have known each other for a long time, and it was wonderful to spend time with them today. I hope more such gatherings are forthcoming.

And tonight we have landed new eyes on Mars. The planning and delicate work involved in getting there safely are phenomenal, and I am so proud of these accomplishments humanity has made. The universe is waiting for us to solve it.

Conversation of the Day #1199

leave a comment »

Anton, Brian and Bob don’t really know each other – the former two only met today – but they (and Sam, not pictured) easily engaged in a long conversation about poverty, politics, the fate of the universe and energy efficiency this evening. I rarely contribute to these conversations – especially regarding politics – but I like to listen. It seems like every thought I could share is something that I take for granted, and is too obvious to say; otherwise I don’t know enough about the subject to say anything at all. I don’t know if this is true or not.

I feel sometimes like every conversation has already been spoken, as every story has been told, and the threat of redundancy looms dark over every word. It’s a faint sensation, though, and perhaps the company is more important than the content anyway.

Nice to be with people, as always.

Song of the Day #818

with 3 comments

Our first night back in Berkeley was spent at a Christmas party hosted by friends of Emily’s family. Music was the goal of the evening, and everyone sang carols and played their instruments, and though at times people tripped up on the lyrics, they generally sounded quite good. My throat wouldn’t permit me to sing, but I sat and listened, and it was rather nice even though I was tired. Bob and Barb can be very silly when they sing (or at any other time), and it was fun to watch Emily and her mom try to communicate silently across the music-filled room.

The weight of sleepiness can be a comforting thing sometimes, if you know you’re going to sleep soon.

Game of the Day #795

I went and had Thanksgiving dinner with Emily and Kate’s families today, while Mom went to a feast with Joe’s family and Dad watched the many football games, and it was naturally a delicious meal. I’ve never been very good at big family meals, since I usually can’t contribute much to tabletop conversation, but these were fun people to dine with, talking about Harry Potter and dinosaurs rather than the politics and gossip I never well understood when I was little. Emily’s parents are good at telling stories over dinner, and it was fun to listen to them after eating.

Party games are a good alternative to in-depth conversation if you are too tired or full or shy to say much, and after a few people left we spent the rest of the evening with Apples to Apples. I like seeing Emily with her parents – they are all such wonderful people.

I saw my dad momentarily today, but I still haven’t seen Mom. Hopefully I can see more of both of them before I leave for Santa Cruz again on Sunday.

Moment of the Day #82

with one comment

Emily’s back! That’s her very jolly father with her, holding Uppy the Dactyl.

Riding BART is an entirely different experience when you’re with people. We took one of the seat sets that face each other and had a little party, talking about books and characters and eye patches. Most everyone on the train keeps to themselves, and half of them are asleep anyway, so I feel a bit odd being party of a vocal conversation, but I got absorbed in it anyway, and Emily’s back! So it didn’t matter.

When we transferred trains the ideal four-set set was taken, so Mackenzie and I slipped into the two alleys at the middle of the car, cloistered like hermit crabs. The space there is very nearly comfortable, and I bet with a little effort I could make it a regular hiding place. No one seemed to notice us anyway.

At the station when we got off, two men were playing Christmas music – one singing, and one on trumpet. They sang “My favorite things” from The Sound of Music, except the lyrics were a bit awry. When the dog bites, when the frog sings, when I’m feeling sad… I simply remember my favorite things, and then I don’t feel~ so bad~!

It had a little bit of a jazzy perk to it, and the passing trains sang along.

And now the break begins!
