Break of the Day #2584

Laurel’s current workplace is out of reach, but Pearce and Brittany are both a short walk away. We met for lunch today, eating atop boulders while little birds bounced around in the grass. This park is a little haven in the city – a much needed place to clear the mind after so many hours surrounded by monitors and the straight lines of streets and skyscrapers.

I ran into Pearce on Bart this morning, before we’d even planned where to eat. He was engrossed in his journaling, trying to document the details of a few missing days before they dissolved from memory. I’m very curious about what his journals are like – I’d love to read just about anyone’s writing – but, naturally, few people are inclined to open their journal to other eyes.

I don’t write everything here, either. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could be completely open with each other?

Band of the Day #2491

Sugar Pines showed off their phenomenal wizardry at Awaken Cafe tonight – harmonies and bass and lovely melodies, all those fantastic voices weaving together to great something superhuman. Laurel and I, still in pajamas, listened to them practice in the apartment this afternoon, and as they played Laurel said their harmonies feel like a hug.

Jam of the Day #2486

I’ve heard Pearce working out some bass lines on his own recently, but tonight I finally got to hear all of the Sugar Pines play together, weaving together some gorgeous harmonies right here in our living room. I did mundane things on the computer and listened to their music; all of it sounded lovely to me, even when they agreed that some phrase or another was rusty.

I love how they deliberate on the particulars of lyrics, bending and twisting each line like strips of wire, trying to sculpt it into something that means precisely what they mean it to in an elegant way. Collective lyric writing is so interesting – I wonder how much of it is made that way, and how much is born from one person’s thoughts.

Music like this is all sorcery, its creation incomprehensible to me, but I’m glad to be here for it.

Widdards of the Day #2478

Pearce and Brittany spent their weekend at the living caldera known as Crater Lake, and spent the long drive between California and Oregon listening to the fifth Harry Potter book. This meant another movie night upon their return, so Laurel and I joined in to watch more fancy wizardry as the series reaches its darker edge.

Here’s the kind of tired you get at night’s end, when ideas mush together and everything becomes funny. There are many ways to end a day, so many of them fantastic, but this is one of my favorites.

Party of the Day #2445

There is a picnic waiting in the future, but we had a smaller something for my birthday tonight, as well. Laurel brought a mango tart, the fruit splayed out like a blooming rose, with six modest candles ready for a wish.

Lighting enough candles to match a person’s age becomes an inconvenience and then a fire hazard as they grow older, but I think it might be nice to count up with each decade – 6 for your 26th birthday, 10 when you reach 30, then back to 1 again as your next chapter begins.

Birthday parties are a good excuse to pull together friends you usually see in different circles. Mitch and Brittany both made it tonight, and the five of us made a spirited chain of miscommunications in Telestrations – one of those games that I feel can characterize a group nicely.

I’ll always miss people, but I’m looking forward to Sunday.

Photo of the Day #2432

We were overdue for another Harry Potter movie night, and tonight Brittany and Pearce were both free after their far-off journeys. Tonight was the Goblet of Fire, which is a perfect example of the difficulty in translating a book to a single film – all spectacle with little cohesion. Watching with Laurel and these two made it fun, though.

They haven’t been away for that long, really, but having them back makes last week feel like it took place in a different life. It’s good to see them again.

Garden of the Day #2393

Pearce and Brittany have been celebrating their fifth anniversary this week, and I am amazed that I have already known them this long. In addition to their celebrations together, they asked the friends who have known them as a couple to come out to the beer garden tonight. Anna was in the area, having recently graduated to a Level 2 Auntie, and was able to come tonight as well; it was an unexpected gift to see her again.

It is late, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the festivities are still going. It’s been a good five years for my friends, and I hope to be able to celebrate with them again in another fifty.
