Finale of the Day #2140

As of today I have officially left the lab, off to pursue other things in the City. Dan has done the same, though he’s already found his place in Industry. Lab folk who were available came out to eat together tonight – one last gathering before Dan and I vanish. Food and conversation were good, dreams and books and peculiar things, and everyone offered hugs as we parted; it was a nice way to end my time with them.

I’ve been working there for about a year and a half now, and I’ve seen several researchers and RAs go and new ones come to take their places. Labs like these are an endless fountain of thoughtful people, always changing; it gives life a strange ephemeral feeling that is probably more common than I realize.

Everyone here is brilliant, and their lives are going to be remarkable, and it was lovely to be a part of that for a while.

Photo of the Day #2127

Sam held a housewarming party today, inviting his friends and colleagues, and with barbecue and bonfire I think we left his new home well-warmed. The party began, as these parties often do, with people sticking to their familiar circles, but as time went on we came together more and more.

Before night fell I mostly kept close to Simon, Dan and Consuelo here. I like them quite a bit – I’ll miss them when I go.

Lunch of the Day #2124

A rare lunch with some of the lab at the delicious Sliver, whose pizza philosophy follows that of the legendary Cheeseboard. Nik, at the top left, left the lab a few months ago to continue on with life, but his visit today sparked plenty of conversation.

Everyone’s so busy when we’re working – it’s nice to get out for moments like these.

Lesson of the Day #1549

Sam is the technical maestro of the lab, fluent in several coding languages, moving through scripts and databases unbound by graphical interfaces; he’s the man to ask if you need to communicate better with the machines. Here he’s advising Consuelo in her own programming endeavors, and soon she’ll be quite the adept too.

Of course, my own coding is very simple right now – Sam and Consuelo are doing the world building – but I’m happy to help, and in time I’ll create something as well.

Crew of the Day #1538

So my first week at the lab has come to an end, and the team was willing to let me take a commemorative photo before Friday Night was in full swing. Gathered in the hallway here, they all pulled together for the snapshot, but after a few moments in front of the camera they started to joke with each other, letting the Cheese smiles go in favor of more genuine expressions. In this week I’ve only just started to talk with them, but everyone seems so friendly; I really think I’ll like working with them.

I still haven’t quite grasped the thought that these are people who care about the same things I do, who want it a major goal of their lives to help decipher how our minds work.

At the moment I’m quite tired, but I’m so excited for coming weeks. It’s a wonderful thing to be learning again.
