Shield of the Day #2620

Jeff has one of those invincible old-fashioned mixing machines in his kitchen – the sort designed in the 50’s, built to survive the apocalypse. It made mixing our cookie dough more simple than I’ve ever known it to be; I’ve been making cookies with recipe since I was three or four years old, and it always took a long bout of wrestling with a bowl and wooden spoon to beat the dough into a smooth solution. The mechanical muscle of this thing gets the job done in just a few seconds. It felt a bit like cheating, but our delicious Charlie cookie came out just as well as we could have hoped for, so there’s no saying that machine-mixed cookies lack heart.

The mixer can be a little messy, though, so as the leaf-shaped beater spun around the bowl, Laurel and Jeff shielded the dough with their hands. Any stray bits fell to the ground, where Moose licked them up.

Afterwards we worked together with Jeff’s brother and Kristina to defuse bombs, and despite a few errant detonations we come out more or less triumphant.

It’s been a good night and we are up way too late, but this week is ours and we can enjoy it as we like.

Photo of the Day #2610

We’ve gotten to hosting people here pretty consistently, and often a different group of friends each time. It feels like coming out of a drought, actually being able to have some fun with people instead of just catching up. We were planning for Kyle, Renée, Jeff and Kristina to join us tonight, and Bob and Alina happened to stop by early as well – bonus hangouts!

It is a little ridiculous how everyone is coupled up, but perhaps that is the way of things as we get older. We played a trivia game and split into teams, and of course were paired with our respective lovelies. Next time, perhaps, we should shift to other groups, because it is a it little strange to interact with friends exclusively as paired units like that. It’s important, still, to get to know everyone individually.

A good night here, and hopefully many more to come.

Algorithm of the Day #2566

Algorithm of the Day #2566

Jeff interviewed for a position at my workplace yesterday. He worked through the challenge problems with a language that he’s just learning – a bit of a risk, though it was more fun for him than to use plain old Java.

It didn’t work out for him, unfortunately, and afterwards he went back and solved the problem on his own as elegantly as he could. Today at lunch, as we sat by the water, he explained to me how his algorithm works. It’s written in Clojure, which I’m told is very much like Lisp, and the style of language is so very different from any other language I’ve seen in common use. At first glance I could barely understand any of it, and that was a little bewildering; I’ve gotten used to a particular family of languages that all work similarly. It’s good to be reminded how much there is left to learn.

Jeff will not be joining me at work, sadly, but he seemed to take the whole experience in good stride. He’s a brilliant sort, and soon someone with money to throw at him will appreciate that.

Bow of the Day #2460

I’ve bumped into Jeff on the way to and from work several times this week, so it was clearly time to meet again for lunch. With compostable plastic bins of salad in hand, we walked down to the water, where Giga Cupid had thoughtlessly left behind his bow centuries ago. Jeff seemed to appreciate the sunlit reprieve, taking time to rest in the grass, and I did as well – we’ve both spent too much time looking at screens, interesting as they may be.

Can we have our lunch breaks in the sun every day again, surrounded by friends, like we did in high school? It is well and good to be past that awkward phase, slightly more confident in ourselves as adults, but it is good for the soul to sit between grass and sun on days like this.

Hat of the Day #2375

Hat of the Day #2375

I had a productive day at work, and arrived at home burnt out. Too tired to focus on anything, I slowly fell asleep while birds welcomed in Spring outside, and woke with that bled-out feeling that I slowly banished with cashews and a Clif bar.

Despite the weary feeling, I made it out to Jeff’s again tonight, where Kristina poked at Jeff’s hedgehog-tea-cozy hat. She’s another friend of his who I only barely recognized; several years ago I saw her face and filed it away somewhere, and as the night progressed my subconscious thumbed through all its old portraits, sweeping away the dust, until it found her again, and now she seems perfectly familiar – though I still can’t remember if we had any classes together.

I walked home much more awake, a bit more alive, than when I’d left. A bit of time with friends was what I needed, it seems.

Jeff of the Day #2367

I bumped into Jeff near my work a few months ago, and had every intention of getting in touch with him afterwards. Many moments have slid away since then, but when I heard he was living nearby as well I finally made the colossal effort of saying hello again.

We had lunch today, which I think may well be the first time I’ve done any sort of activity with just Jeff. He was part of our group of friends at Berkeley High, but all of our interactions before were in a group of some sort – save for our online conversations, where we both talked about the things that troubled us over the years.

So we talked again over lunch, but conversation revolved mostly around work and various technical tidbits. As we were saying goodbye it became clear that we hadn’t really caught up at all, and that there were many other things left for us to talk about. This is how it goes, it seems; often it’s easier to talk as if you see each other every day. There will be time later – it sounds like Jeff puts on some lovely dinner parties.

Nose of the Day #1770

Today was Janine’s Golden Birthday – 27 years old on the 27th – and to celebrate she brought people together for another picnic by the Molecule. I haven’t seen her or Jeff since her birthday last year, so I’m really glad she continued with the picnic tradition.

I keep saying it, but people are lovely, and days like this are always my favorites.
