Mustache of the Day #1779

Alina crafted a crown of clovers, strongly braided and worthy of royalty, and after testing it on herself bestowed it to Kellen. To match he donned a dandelion mustache; holding it place requires a kingly facial expression.

They are both leaving tomorrow – Alina to the lively waters of the Caribbean – and it may be that I won’t see either of them much in the foreseeable future, so I was glad for the chance for a goodbye.

Custom of the Day #1739

This is the third Game Night with Alina’s lab colleagues, the third war over Westeros that I’ve engaged in, and when the throne is claimed and the crows are fed we have a little time to talk about linguistics and cartoons before heading home. It’s gradually turning into a weekly custom; life has this way of gently changing tint as new people enter and leave, and I wonder how often I’ll be here again.

I woke early today, hoing it would inspire sleeping early, but I am still here and awake – barely. I’m dreaming of ghost tadpoles and bells wearing knit caps; deeper sleep will wash that all away.

Spin of the Day #1737

Kellen, Alina and I ventured to the edge of the bay tonight for a few rounds of fire spinning. Flames never roar so well as when they’re rushing through the air around you; these burning staves are a great way to experience the heat and sound without sitting yourself or your friends on fire. Alina and I each spun one staff until the flames died, and Kellen took his second turn with two, weaving knotted spheres around himself. It’s only when we press several seconds together that we can see the glowing paths in his movements, but the flames in person are always an impressive sight.

We went home shortly after this. That’s all you need to make an evening, sometimes – a burst of flame to light the night, and you can go to sleep happy.

Hug of the Day #1736

Rosie and Alina are faceless from slight motions here, but this half-backwards hug still holds all of its hug powers. People would be happier if they hugged as easily as these two, I think.

Returning home tonight, I biked through the beginnings of the rainclouds striking tomorrow. Lamppost-born crepuscular rays thrived in the thick mist, every source of light exultant and soft.

I feel so strange tonight, like a rubber band after it’s been snapped across the room, or an overcharged battery pack, or a sunburned clover leaf, or a river flooded with snowmelt and drained by a growing village. It’s not pleasant or unpleasant, but something to savor, and I’m curious about how sleep will transmute it.

Crash of the Day #1732

I really ought to be sleeping now, but here are Alina and Kellen’s faces in the midst of a Castle Crashers brawl. It would be fun, I think, to make a collection of game faces, as everyone leaves behind a different sort of countenance when they dive into a game. Cameras invoke self-consciousness, though; it’s hard to deliberately capture someone’s focused expression.

Time, now, for what I hope will be some very rich sleep.

War of the Day #1731

War of the Day #1731

Another return to Westeros, further imaginary blood spilled for power and glory, and after a surprisingly brief war tonight Alina came out the clear victor. The game made a good reason to see Alina’s lab friends again, and after the battles were settled we lingered around for several more hours, talking about neuroscience and graduate school politics and how to get the most out of your perception of the world.

I used to take time specifically to let my mind wander, to push it through tunnels and sieves, stretching and molding thoughts to see where I could go, and I think I’ve been slacking on that recently. Even when life is going slow it tends to be so busy, and I never do what I really intended.

I’m always writing here about what I want to do, or what I ought to do, and that futile redundancy kills me.

I want to skirt the edge of sleep, like sitting in a pool up to my eyes, and write out the little phantasmagoria I find there. Would that be too chaotic, too confusing?

Forgive me if one of these posts someday turns is just pure unpasteurized nonsense. I need to pay more attention to my dreams.

I know I’ve caused you pain

Game of the Day #1055

Failing a trip to the Marina or a firebending session, one can always rely on games to provide social momentum. Kellen and Alina had only a short time to spare today, but they came over anyway and were eager to play a game – more so that we could do something together than out of any special interest in Fluxx. Kellen won, then Emily, then Alina, and so the night ended without a single victory for me. Life is about the journey, anyway.

I wonder when friends are going to start coming over just to talk. That’s a sign of being a real grownup, it seems.
