Kitten of the Day #2294

Laurel has been dreaming of adopting a cat for quite a while now. Yesterday we thought that she might be able to take one of Barb’s fostered kitten’s, and this morning it came true – such a sudden change in both Laurel’s life and the life of her new kitten, who goes by Zinky.

At three months old, Zinky is still quite small, but full of boundless energy. Once he’d inspected every corner of Laurel’s apartment, growing familiar with his new home, he felt comfortable enough to patter back and forth across the living room, wrestle with his pom-pom wand, and lunge out from underneath the sofa.

Laurel is still a new entity to Zinky, so he needed time before he could cuddle up with her. This evening he joined us on the couch and fell asleep against her, and I could almost hear her heart melting.

I like seeing Laurel like this, completely astounded by the tine life who’s joined her. It’s nice to see her happy, and I know she’ll make Zinky happy as well.

Kittens of the Day #2048

Two separate batches of kittens were at the Dactyl household today – one set six weeks old, the other only one. These two are from the elder group, of course; their eyes and ears are sharp, and they’ve learned to jump, chase, and gnaw on whatever grabs their attention. The week-old kittens, with curled ears, squinting eyes and wobbling legs, are little more than squeaky slugs, piling over one another in a fluffy mass.

As six weeks old they still have much to learn, but it still amazes me how quickly they grow comfortable with their bodies and with the world. They have to build models of momentum and perspective and every other physical trick in order to pull off their acrobatics; it takes humans years to get close to that ability, and some never do.

One of the older kittens fell asleep on my lap today, a tiny thing snoring into a crease in my jeans. I didn’t need anything else to make today a good day.

Kitten of the Day #1827

The fountain of kittens is ever-flowing, and the time has come again to see the new litter growing at the Dactyl household. Black with hints of silver, they came to the house starved and frail, but Barb has expertly raised them into warm and healthy creatures. In time they’ll all go on to find good homes, and the cycle will repeat once again.

At about three weeks old, these kittens are strong and lucid enough to wander around the room, but not quite coordinated enough to do any serious scampering. Their feet splay a little when the walk, and slight imbalances can send them stumbling sideways. In another week or two they’re sure to be chasing each other across the room, and then there will be no stopping them, but this period between slug and wildling is wonderfully awkward.

The light in this room is often diffuse, with only indirect sun streaming through the window, so they may not even know their own shadows yet. The world has a lot of surprises waiting for them.

Fluff of the Day #1624

Fluff of the Day #1624

It’s been a while, but today I once again had the pleasure of visiting the Dactyl household to see their newest batch of kittens. They’re three little creatures, smaller than rats and barely steady enough to maneuver over lumps of rumpled terrycloth; I’d forgotten what it was like to hold someone so small.

You can see this one teetering on the edge of sleep, likely bubbling with dreams but still holding on to the waking world by a few threads. The feeling is contagious; after some length of time with them, I found myself becoming a little drowsy while Alina and Barb continued to cuddle the kittens.

Just three weeks old, these kittens have a long way grow before they find their new families; hopefully you’ll see them when they’re strong enough to cause trouble.

It’s rare to get a kitten’s attention with a camera – usually they are apathetic toward it, or even vehemently disinterested, looking everywhere but at the lens.

But it’s important to capture the sight of a kitten looking up at you, eyes all full of wonder. It’s good for the heart, and time spent with these warm fuzzballs is a great comfort – even with the small incidental scratches and the flailing dances they enact as they pursue a bent A string.

I’d like to make friends with a cat again someday.

Jungle Gym of the Day #1161

Brian and Laura made a perfect play structure for the kittens, stretching out their arms to build bridges from one set of shoulders to the other. They would lean forward or backward as necessary to keep the kittens from slipping off – a far more obliging jungle gym than what you find in most playgrounds.

It’s always good to see kittens make people happy – and vice versa.

I’ve seen very little of Laura the past few years, so I was glad to have her visit today, even if for just a little while. In high school we talked online quite a bit, and those conversations encouraged me to think and helped shape me into the person I am today. Without Laura I might have gone in a completely different direction with my life, so I’m thankful to have met her.

Laura and Brian have both graduated, and are knee deep in the vast waters of adulthood. They’re responsible, intelligent people, and I’m sure they’ll both be swimming strongly in time. I hope that I can join them soon.

Kitten of the Day #1148

I spent some time with the newest batch of kittens today, since I’d been neglecting the opportunity all weekend. Two of them came and fell asleep on my lap, just tiny purring puffs of ash, and later a third came and riled things up a bit.

Kittens have the remarkable property of weight without mass – despite their small size, it’s impossible to get up if they’re resting on you. With my camera up in the loft, I missed the chance to photograph them in their torpid state, and when they awoke it was impossible to get a clear shot. This is the best I got; at least it has some hint of what it’s like to have a tiny creature looking up to you.

I miss having a cat, and making friends with it. When I find my own place to live I’d like to adopt a kitten from one of the Dactyl batches and grow up with it.
