Smash of the Day #2408

A more mundane evening tonight after yesterday’s festivities: coffee cake, partially popped popcorn, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and a board game that left the four of us stranded in the desert despite our best efforts. Small parties like this are good, and much easier on the vocal cords than 120-person weddings.

The weekend has worn me down, and unless tonight’s sleep is especially rich, I may need another day home.

Smash of the Day #2252

Just this one skewed snapshot today, because today was Smash Day. These fine folks came by to celebrate with a proper marathon of the new game; a few of Jacob’s friends joined in as well, and we had a good crowd through the evening.

Smash Bros is, somewhat inexplicably, a game that I could play almost forever, and a new installment in the series is a rare occasion that actually brings out other people who’d like to play. It’s been a good evening – and I should do something else with the rest of the weekend, to keep myself human.

Molecule of the Day #2079

With blanket and cupcakes, slackline and a massive bowl of fruit, we went out to the park today to meet my friends for a picnic I’d pulled together. For some reason I feel a little silly trying to organize my own birthday party – like I am asking people to celebrate me – but this time I wanted to see a lot of the friends who’ve drifted away over the years, and to see what kinds of reactions arise when my different circles of friends interact.

There’s a certain natural tendency at this kind of event, when strangers are brought together, for them to separate back into their own groups like the layers in a salad dressing. This left me fretting a little at one point, wondering if people were comfortable. Eventually, though, a number them mixed together on this glassy structure, talking and swinging and throwing kooshes, and everyone got along quite nicely.

There are so many wonderful people I know and want to see more, and it’s so hard to balance everything. Today was lovely, and hopefully this summer I’ll manage to see more of the friends I’ve been missing lately.

World of the Day #1928

Anton’s leaving for Boston again tomorrow, but we managed to sneak in one more game night before his departure. In Small World we each lead our civilizations of choice as they spread across the land, squabbling over mountains and prairies whenever they met. My Spirit Homunculi, Heroic Ghouls and Were-Giants took a comfortable corner of the world, but Mitch and Leyla’s pixies gave them the win.

This is the last night of my little vacation, and it seems so strange that I’m returning to work tomorrow. I’ve been away from the lab for about two weeks, and already it feels like a separate part of my life. This has been a good break, but I’m looking forward to being productive again.

Snapshot of the Day #1923

With my pocket camera left at the haus and my mirrorless forgotten at home, I had only my phone to capture the evening – a place too dim for the little camera, though bright enough for our own eyes.

I’ve meant to get Important Things done this past week, but each day has insisted on being a vacation. Perhaps I should embrace that, and just dedicate myself to more formal accomplishments when January comes.

I climbed with Esther a bit this afternoon, had plenty of pizza and video games with these guys in the evening, and came home to cherry chocolates my sister left on my doorstep. It’s been a fine day.

Chips of the Day #1843

Our new apartment is online! Your regularly scheduled programming will resume henceforth. It’s gotten late, and the apartment is quiet and chilly, but this was a good night with friends and I am looking forward to coming days.

The chips in poker seem to slosh around the table, rather than flow downstream to the winner, so games can last for ages as everyone’s cache waxes and wanes. Mitch’s riches dwindled after this photo and Kendra’s grew; Leyla’s evaporated in one unfortunate turn and I barely survived to the end. Without the stress of monetary winnings, though, the game becomes more of a platform for banter than an end in itself, which is how I like to play.

Settlement of the Day #1783

It’s been a while since we visited our little voxel world, but tonight we set out across the open sea and founded a new settlement in the ice mountains. Mitch and Lee worked a little later than I did, finishing a greenhouse to feed our tiny civilization, and in coming days we’ll build a proper castle worthy of the the arched cliffs framing the countryside.

Without context, the three of us gazing into our respective screens may look asocial, but we’re tied together through the game – little invisible threads. These games are always better with friends to create with.
