Swing of the Day #2049

I was lost in my head as I crossed the street on the way home today, and it took me a moment to see Lena and Renée waving to me from the other side. I haven’t seen either of them in quite a while, so we stood on the corner there discussing our current positions in life and what we wanted to do next.

The next thing to do, of course, was to have a go on the swings nearby. We flew back and forth a bit, talking more about work; Lena is interviewing for her next job, and Renée is working towards becoming a teacher. There’s something nice about that – riding the swings I’ve known since I was tiny, talking about establishing ourselves as adults.

I might have walked home a different way today. It was lucky I stuck to this path – these chance meetings are so valuable

Team of the Day #1892

Jacob has been running Trivia Night for a long time now, but I only made it for the first time tonight. Laurel and I were completely stumped on most of the questions, but Hannah, Lena and Mike were brilliant – we ended only one point away from a win.

It’s a good time, and Jacob runs the game with uncommon good humor. Perhaps next time we’ll win; if not, it will still be worth it.

Crowns of the Day #1562

Crowns of the Day #1562

These royal crowns were granted by a set of stale Christmas Crackers that refused to pop at the birth of the new year. Though they lacked the festive sounds we were hoping for, the crowns do provide the wearer with command over one of the elements, and these new abilities promise a good 2013.

It was a good night, and one less alienating than last year’s; this circle of friends seems to take the influence of alcohol more quietly, and I never felt disconnected from people despite their apparent inebriation.

I mentally divide my life more by Septembers than Januarys – it marks the start of school years and of the years of this project – but a little reflection on 2012 is still appropriate.

This has been a hard year. Splitting up with Emily, graduating and drifting through five months of unemployment left me feeling a bit groundless, doubtful about the future and sometimes rather lonely. In the last two months, though, life has leveled out a bit, and it looks like things are going to improve in the next year.

Still trying to figure myself out, but I’ll get it.

I hope this year is good to you.

I can’t give it up

Send-off of the Day #1465

Anton is moving to Boston next week, so Megan wanted to collect a few people together at the Albatross tonight to give him a proper goodbye. We ate infinite popcorn and played cards and darts, and the others enjoyed various drinks while I was sated with water.

Freya, at the top, was a good friend between middle and high school, and since then has appeared in my life intermittently. It’s good to see these people again, if only for a moment.

Hopefully Anton will find good experiences in Boston. It’s hard to see him go – my social circle here is tiny as it is, and I’m going to miss him very much.

Come on, life, get your engine running…

Huddle of the Day #1183

leave a comment »

I spent much of today and yesterday on my own (save for dinner at Dad’s yesterday and a movie with my mom and sister today), so it was a nice surprise to see so many friends congregating at Emily’s house late tonight. They’re all engrossed in Sean of the Dead, which, despite its comedic face, conveys the weight and fear of a zombie apocalypse better than any other movie I’ve seen.

So today is a mundane post, but I like seeing how everyone is huddled together here, wrapped in a collective blanket or united by late night food. I’m looking forward to seeing friends this break. Good things should happen.
