Bridge of the Day #2469

We went to watch some hollywood dinosaurs tonight – dragons, really, scaly creatures molded to match the bones we unearthed in the last hundred years. The story was almost self-consciously absurd, all explosions and claws and inevitable Movie Moments, but fun all the same.

I like this bridge we cross over to get to the theater – cool concrete with messages scrawled here and there, the train tracks passing beneath us, and a view of some peculiar colored fans, each spinning at different speeds, if you look over the edge.

It’s a good day for a lot of people today.

Intrigue of the Day #2455

Friends on the sofa with piles of snacks, all trying to work out the riddle we’ve created for one another. We played a game of Things following Porco Rosso tonight, and I got to see more more of these wonderful people here – time with them has been all too rare lately.

We are all tired, but fortunately the week is over. Laurel’s drifted off, so I will drift as well.

Hop of the Day #2386

For Leyla’s birthday we drove out over the bridge, over and under the hills, to reach a beach that stood against the ocean itself – not just the bay we find in Berkeley and Santa Cruz. The horizon felt like a bigger infinity, and when I looked out to the edge of the world I was often hypnotized there for a moment.

The sand was dark and coarse, with crystalline grains softened by the waves. Pearce and Mitch decided it made a decent cushion, and pulled off a few jumps just to get some air.

I feel like we ought to have had a cake and candles for Leyla – not for the cake itself, but because it’s nice to have a focused moment for a person on their birthday. Sushi and udon worked well enough, though, and at the end of the evening Leyla and Mitch both seemed full and happy.

They’ve been doing well lately. I hope their next year is good to them.

Bronco of the Day #2380

The new exercise ball lives in my room, but when friends are over it comes out to play. It functions something like a domestic mechanical bull; people like to test themselves on it, lifting their feet from the ground and keeping upright as long as they can. Fairly often they will roll onto their back, and though there is no recovery from that position, they still attempt to stay atop the ball, arms and legs flailing. Occasionally someone will outright crash, but so far we have zero casualties.

Jackie Chan gets more spectacular the older I get, and it was good to get people together to marvel at him tonight.

Smush of the Day #2371

Over the years Cake has become familiar with the haus folk, visiting them on their doorstep day after day. He’s finally passed the threshold and visited their home itself, where he acted as if he’d lived there all his life.

Mitch made him levitate a bit just moments before this; Cake’s response was fair and just.

A good night tonight, and the weekend is a very welcome thing.

Gesture of the Day #2344

Mid-conversation photos can often come out pretty peculiar, but I think certain moments from them can capture a lot about a person’s character. Leyla and Mitch both make this sort of expression sometimes, often when they’re adopting the tone of someone trying to explain their their (ridiculous) opinions, which they feel should be common sense.

I spent several minutes trying to characterize this face and gesture, and that’s the closest approximation to it that I can make, but my words still feel so lacking.

In a separate conversation this evening we talked about whether we each wanted to raise children. Anton is looking forward to it someday; Mitch wants to be a better parent than the parents he knew growing up; Leyla feels that she’s a lot like her mom, which would therefore make her a great parent. This would be some time from now; she mentioned how different we’ll all be in ten years. I wonder what she’ll be like then – I’m so curious to find out.

Photo of the Day #2280

The haus folk held their Friendsmas tonight, and invited us along for a bit of merriment by the LCD fire and real-live pine tree. It was a good night, and after the crowd dispersed a bit I was left there with Leyla, Mitch, Laurel and Pearce. The group was small enough then for a single cohesive conversation, which let everything end nicely.

Mm, we ought to go snorkeling, too…
