Monster of the Day #2581

Mack and Emily still possess the ability to combine into a single rampaging monster. I managed to get this shot shortly before losing custody of my revolver, and once they took hold of it I was executed on the spot. Let this photo be my final testament to the horrors of nerf war.

This particular gathering was in part for Emily’s twenty-fifth birthday, and she managed to pull together a rather tremendous group of friends. Once the sun fell, Laurel and I invited everyone into our place, where even more friends joined us.

Emily is quick to put herself down, but she has a lot of friends who recognize how wonderful she is and are happy to show how much they appreciate her.

Everyone’s gone home now. Laurel’s asleep, and the apartment is in quiet disarray. I’ve been staring at this sentence for a few minutes now, wondering how to end it, but we should all be sleeping. It has been a good day, it was was lovely to see people, and further adventures should come soon.

I won’t say it at all

Soldiers of the Day #2553

Soldiers of the Day #2553

Emily arranged another Nerf war today – the first in a very long time, and a sort of triumphant return to shenanigans at the Molecule. Mitch and Clara, both of whom I haven’t seen enough lately, were there; and Mack and Ralph, neither of whom I’ve seen in a long time, made it out as well. Emily herself was off gathering snacks for us when I took this photo, and when she returned we had a long overdue feast there under the molecule: cheese and gouda, dried apples, peanut butter cups, olive oil popcorn, hard cider.

We started with a vague notion to just shoot each other and try not to be shot, and eventually organized a sort of tower-siege game. It turns out that the Molecule is rather difficult to defend, but all the attackers still suffered a number of dramatic deaths before stealing away the defenders’ doomsday device.

Afterwards Laurel and I had nearly everyone over for dinner and games – our first party at this apartment. We had to shuffle around the furniture to seat everyone together, but the makeshift arrangement worked well enough.

It’s so nice to see all these friends again – I feel like I’ve replenished some essential vitamin I’ve been missing for a long time.

I just wanted to be near you

Reassembly of the Day #1721

Reassembly of the Day #1721

The wonderful people of the Dactyl household, well acquainted with the intricacies of bicycle machinery, collaborated today to perform surgery on my misbehaving gears. With grease-blackened fingers and obscure tools they dismantled the rear clockwork, gear by gear, and wiped away the dust and debris that I’d accumulated over many miles. Thanks to their hard work, my wheel is spinning smoothly and tickering happily, and perhaps I’ve gained a modicum of mechanical knowledge as well.

A new batch of kittens is nearly grown and ready to meet their futures, and I spent some time with them as well before heading home. Photos from our encounter are posted here. Barb chronicles the development of her many fostered kittens there – prologues to many lives scattered cross the city – so do take a look.

It’s always nice to see the Dactyls again.

Blueprint of the Day #1435

Kate has aspirations of building a small (very small) museum, so she collected a few of us together to help design the building. None of us have a mind for architecture, though – inventing interesting geometries is almost as hard for me as creating melodies from scratch – so we dithered about for quite a while trying to come up with a floor plan and a roof. Kate is hoping for something like a modern museum, with peculiar abstract shapes that look almost like they don’t belong in the real world, but it needs to be something she could feasibly build, as well.

We looked online for museum blueprints, hoping to find inspiration, and Mackenzie’s search produced this image of the Millenium Falcon. We thought it silly at the time, but a building shaped like that ship might work quite well…

It’s so easy to fantasize about big ideas – scenes for your story, rules for your card game, outrageous coconut-related deaths for your tongue-in-cheek horror film – and so difficult to bring them to fruition. Our minds fill in the gaps, like the background in a dream, and when we try to actually create these things we are suddenly stuck drawing out the details we’d never considered.

It takes dedication to do big things. Even very small big things. I hope Kate finds her inspiration – it would be wonderful to see her idea come to life.

but it’s of her I dream

Photos of the Day #1188

At the end of the night I realized that I had only taken photos with my 3DS, and I had the option of either taking another photo right before bed or using a low-res shot from the game machine. I opted for the latter; it seems more honest, and does a better job of representing the day. It’s also, technically, two photos, taken in a binocular fashion. What you probably see here is just one eye’s view, but with the right device you can see it in illusory 3D.

I had a bit of a headache from the cross-eyed vision my 3DS imposed upon me when its lenses disagreed, but it’s worth it for the feel of gadgetry.

Huddle of the Day #1183

I spent much of today and yesterday on my own (save for dinner at Dad’s yesterday and a movie with my mom and sister today), so it was a nice surprise to see so many friends congregating at Emily’s house late tonight. They’re all engrossed in Sean of the Dead, which, despite its comedic face, conveys the weight and fear of a zombie apocalypse better than any other movie I’ve seen.

So today is a mundane post, but I like seeing how everyone is huddled together here, wrapped in a collective blanket or united by late night food. I’m looking forward to seeing friends this break. Good things should happen.

Laugh of the Day #1158

To put it simply, these are people whom I like very much, and it makes me happy to see them smiling together. I want to just leave this as a sight to look back on and let it be. Ten years from now this photo might make sentimental hairline cracks run through my heart, and it will be worth it.

For now, it’s time to sleep.
