Pebble of the Day #2358

Last night I dreamed of coding for the first time since App Academy. It might be a little maddening if that were all I were doing, but I’ve been able to get some sun and see the sea every day here.

Matt has settled in well to his post-App Academy job out here. Spare moments on the weekends have let him explore the area, and now perhaps he knows the secrets of Santa Cruz better than I do.

We biked out to Wilder today, which I always felt was some secret hideaway, but Matt already knew it well. A caravan of colorful bikers passed us on the dirt path, and when we caught up to them they were standing in a row at the edge of the water, about to soak their feet. The fern cave was less toothy and more populous than usual, so we moved on.

Past the fern cave is one more cove, where the walls are so brittle you can pull slabs and slivers out with your fingers. I’d stood there before with Lauren and Pearce, and the splashing waves inched up just short of our toes. Today we found a colony of sea lions basking there, like the living raft I watched three years ago had run ashore. When we stepped into view they looked up at us and the group started to wriggle away, ready to drop into the water.

It’s good to find that Matt is doing well, and loving the Santa Cruz life – as I thought he would. I haven’t heard from many other App Academy alumni, and can only hope that they’ve all found their footing.

Developers of the Day #2246

App Academy ended three weeks ago, and on Monday Petry and Matt will start their new jobs. John is sitting on three job offers and my new job will start soon well. We all found something for ourselves so much faster than I expected; it’s nice to see things coming together after all the intensive work we went through.

Matt will be working in Santa Cruz, so I had to call people together for a dinner tonight while we still had him around. Our first time all meeting without code work hanging over our heads, and it was a lovely evening.

This is a composite panoramic shot; the only other way to capture everyone would have been to break out of the moment further and step to the corner of the room. Look closely and you can see the seams, but it does its job well enough. Laurel was on my left as I took this photo; imagine her in your blind spot, perhaps.

I’m so curious about how everyone’s jobs will work out. More on this story as it develops.

Photo of the Day #2238

We went out for lunch today after one of App Academy’s last remaining Ned Talks. Big burritos, like what fueled us during our final projects, this time eaten with leisure by the restaurant’s whales and mermaids.

John spent the last week working on a friend’s farm, doing physical work to recover from the long stretch of intensive coding we’ve all been doing. Over lunch we talked about the Nature of our species, comparing the much more grounded lifestyle of living on the land to spending our lives manipulating abstracted sequences of code.

I like that we have the option to do both.

Recruit of the Day #2225

With our App Academy responsibilities starting to ease a little, Matt took some time today to come to the other side of the bay and join us on the plastic cliffs. Pearce met him for the first time, but was amicable as always, happy to give Matt a proper overview of basic climbing techniques.

This was only Matt’s second time climbing, I believe, but he took to it well, scaling a few V2s and putting forth a weighty effort at the routes that denied him.

It’s good to be back doing this, and always fun to introduce someone new to the gym. If you haven’t yet, do come and give it a try.

Pizza of the Day #2224

Today marked the official end of App Academy, though they’ll still offer a few lectures, and advice whenever we need it. Employers came to talk to us, and to check out our creations, and for an hour or two the class was loud and buzzing with business talk.

Tonight didn’t quite have the kick that our Final Project Day did, since we haven’t really finished the ultimate goal of the course – finding ourselves snazzy new careers – so our celebration was a more mild thing. I went along with a few for pizzas, though I’m sure other little parties took place as well.

These are great people, and this whole thing has been a fantastic experience. I won’t feel done until I’ve started the next thing, and then that won’t be done for quite a long time – so it goes. Always something new today, which is the way we like it to be.

Crossing of the Day #2216

We went out to a Rails meetup tonight – one of many gatherings where masters of code share techniques and philosophies from their craft. It was a long walk from the Academy, and a spontaneous decision to go, but the streets are full of lights and the night was welcoming.

We’ll all find some solid ground very soon. It’ll happen.
