Conference of the Day #1638

Leyla’s family is away in Turkey, leaving Mitch to tend to the house and its collection of cats. Humans are clever enough, though, to let them span that distance in an instant, and so the cats can still be loved from afar. Mitch will be on his own for much of the week, so I know he appreciates keeping in contact like this – video calls can be such a comfort.

The cats there are so sweet. One came to join me as I slept on the sofa this morning, and while the two of us dreamed we had something in common.

Glow of the Day #1602

Whatever adventures a day might bring, and whatever weighs on you throughout the week – work or otherwise – it’s always nice just to sit and e with friends for a while. Time spent over the glow of a screen can work as well as anything else – the medium isn’t really important.

Time seems to be going by so quickly now.

Leap of the Day #1586

The campus here, though less wooded than UCSC, is filled with so many kinds of lovely trees – eucalyptus, oak, redwood and trees I can’t name who coat the ground with pools of golden leaves. On my own I rarely take the time to go out and appreciate them, but Mitch and Miles appeared today and we went out in search of good branches to climb.

Mitch thought himself far out of reach in this tree, but was taken by surprise when Miles revealed his ability to fly. With any newfound superpower, you have to wait for the right moment to tell people – the feeling of shock and awe is best when it immediately follows shattered doubt.

It’s fun to see a moment coming and capture it at just the right instant.

Skaters of the Day #1547

I biked through damp streets to meet Mitch and Miles here, where they carried out their experiments in kinetic energy and angular momentum. There’s a lot of finesse required with this equipment, familiarity with your legs and your center of gravity, and I can only keep steady on these boards for a few moments. I do think with a little time I could get a better sense for it, but spending time on one skill means sacrificing time for another. I climbed things while the wheels rolled, and the three of us went on our way before the rain returned.

Gliding over the pavement in that nonchalant way has a certain sort of appeal; I had to enjoy it, if only vicariously, while Miles and Mitch threaded their way through the streets.

Backyard of the Day #1452

Leyla’s backyard drops away to a creek running through the woods – a place to adventure rather like Calvin’s backyard forest, though with these urban infusions to give the place a distinct flavor. It seems like a lovely place to grow up, and makes me wish I had such a place to explore when I was little.

Living in Santa Cruz did offer something close, though. This place blends a little of the Santa Cruz woods and the Bulb; I wonder how many places like it there are in the world.

Photo of the Day #1426

leave a comment »

There are certainly days where we just burn time together, letting moments pass by easily, and that’s okay. We can have those odd laughs and friendly insults, and play games whose outcome isn’t very important to anyone. Enjoy the evening and its place among countless other evenings.

Something about this photo – or the way I’m looking at it, more like – feels like time is physically stuck like a jammed gear, and we are all still sitting there in Jacob’s living room, doing our wonderful mundane things, forever.

Keep being human, and have a good life.
