Bite of the Day #2562

Anton starts his new job in a few days, and part of the transition to this new chapter for him is a new apartment – the first home that he has to himself. Mitch and I helped him pack some things into his parents’ minivan (his mother provided fresh apple cake), his whole family came out to send him off, and we drove across the city to see what would become his new home.

As we took turns carrying furniture up the four flights of stairs, we could hear the sound of some unfamiliar stringed instrument – a guzheng, perhaps? – drifting over a neighbor’s fence. That on its own made it seem like a lovely place to live, a neighborhood full of color.

We finished, finally, and some rather fantastical pizza arrived to congratulate us. I can’t quite appreciate the flavor of mushrooms but they did fit a remarkable variety on one pie, and the other was so intensely flavorful – gorgonzola, roasted pear, unnamable greens and spices. Each slice almost collapsed under the weight of the toppings, so we had to take big bites to start each one off.

I think Anton will like it here.

Soldiers of the Day #2553

Soldiers of the Day #2553

Emily arranged another Nerf war today – the first in a very long time, and a sort of triumphant return to shenanigans at the Molecule. Mitch and Clara, both of whom I haven’t seen enough lately, were there; and Mack and Ralph, neither of whom I’ve seen in a long time, made it out as well. Emily herself was off gathering snacks for us when I took this photo, and when she returned we had a long overdue feast there under the molecule: cheese and gouda, dried apples, peanut butter cups, olive oil popcorn, hard cider.

We started with a vague notion to just shoot each other and try not to be shot, and eventually organized a sort of tower-siege game. It turns out that the Molecule is rather difficult to defend, but all the attackers still suffered a number of dramatic deaths before stealing away the defenders’ doomsday device.

Afterwards Laurel and I had nearly everyone over for dinner and games – our first party at this apartment. We had to shuffle around the furniture to seat everyone together, but the makeshift arrangement worked well enough.

It’s so nice to see all these friends again – I feel like I’ve replenished some essential vitamin I’ve been missing for a long time.

I just wanted to be near you

Cake of the Day #2915

Cake of the Day #2915

I visited the Haus after work today, and as I came up the stairs I saw Cake napping on the tin roof of the garage – like a scene from a play, almost. I didn’t quite recognize him at first; my memory of him was for some reason of a bigger cat, with a thicker fur coat. I am still a little bewildered that he looked so unfamiliar to me.

Mitch and Cake still get along splendidly, though. While we sat on the porch Mitch talked a bit about a comic he and Leyla dreamed up on their flight back from Florida. I’ve had so many ideas bubble like that, and been excited to bring them to reality, and it’s so hard to get past that first phase; I really want to see them make something fantastic.

Gosh, but we should all just be as happy as Cake is here.

Chop of the Day #2477

Mitch proved his mettle again today, carrying on the tradition of splitting a watermelon with a single top for this year’s Slaughtermelon. He performed in front of a bigger audience today, and with a total of five watermelons prepared for the slaughter, a lot of new people got to take a swing at it.

I made an attempt as well – my first time in these three years of the tradition. I managed to split the fruit in three swings, and might not have been able to manage a fourth if the watermelon hadn’t finally given in. Tonight I carry a small scar on my forearm from the encounter, and my hand still aches a bit from the first swing, but so much the better; I have come away with physical proof of the challenge I met.

The fifth and final watermelon was the toughest we’ve seen yet; hardened in the freezer, it took Mitch four chops to break open, parrying his attacks in the greatest battle I’ve ever witnessed between man and melon.

The chopped fruit was eaten or drunk as the party went on. A few apples met a brutal fate today, as well, but we’ve yet to see anyone attempt this with a durian.

Bridge of the Day #2469

We went to watch some hollywood dinosaurs tonight – dragons, really, scaly creatures molded to match the bones we unearthed in the last hundred years. The story was almost self-consciously absurd, all explosions and claws and inevitable Movie Moments, but fun all the same.

I like this bridge we cross over to get to the theater – cool concrete with messages scrawled here and there, the train tracks passing beneath us, and a view of some peculiar colored fans, each spinning at different speeds, if you look over the edge.

It’s a good day for a lot of people today.

Intrigue of the Day #2455

Friends on the sofa with piles of snacks, all trying to work out the riddle we’ve created for one another. We played a game of Things following Porco Rosso tonight, and I got to see more more of these wonderful people here – time with them has been all too rare lately.

We are all tired, but fortunately the week is over. Laurel’s drifted off, so I will drift as well.

Party of the Day #2445

There is a picnic waiting in the future, but we had a smaller something for my birthday tonight, as well. Laurel brought a mango tart, the fruit splayed out like a blooming rose, with six modest candles ready for a wish.

Lighting enough candles to match a person’s age becomes an inconvenience and then a fire hazard as they grow older, but I think it might be nice to count up with each decade – 6 for your 26th birthday, 10 when you reach 30, then back to 1 again as your next chapter begins.

Birthday parties are a good excuse to pull together friends you usually see in different circles. Mitch and Brittany both made it tonight, and the five of us made a spirited chain of miscommunications in Telestrations – one of those games that I feel can characterize a group nicely.

I’ll always miss people, but I’m looking forward to Sunday.
