Commute of the Day #2612

Day_2612

Pearce and I board at different stations, but we often end up riding the same car of the same train on the way to work. Usually he catches up in his journal as he rides, while I’ve been writing for NaNoWriMo; today we just sat together and talked, which is at least as good. Pearce is working on music mixing again, which is a subtle art – manipulating multiple layers of a song to they sound good together while still maintaining an organic feel.

The days are busy – it’s good to have rides like these to keep caught up with friends.

Pearce didn’t quite get to save the land of Hyrule before the move, so we need to have him over now and then to finish his adventures. There’s a bit more left than I remembered, so Laurel and I snacked on spooky Oreos and milk while Pearce battled a flying leviathan infested with eyeball parasites.

Today was a bit of minor maintenance and a bit of time just to Be, and I think I feel better for it. Laurel and I went out for a walk, hoping to find the little mistress kitty she’d befriended, but no luck today. Another time, perhaps.

Break of the Day #2584

Laurel’s current workplace is out of reach, but Pearce and Brittany are both a short walk away. We met for lunch today, eating atop boulders while little birds bounced around in the grass. This park is a little haven in the city – a much needed place to clear the mind after so many hours surrounded by monitors and the straight lines of streets and skyscrapers.

I ran into Pearce on Bart this morning, before we’d even planned where to eat. He was engrossed in his journaling, trying to document the details of a few missing days before they dissolved from memory. I’m very curious about what his journals are like – I’d love to read just about anyone’s writing – but, naturally, few people are inclined to open their journal to other eyes.

I don’t write everything here, either. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could be completely open with each other?

Stage of the Day #2567

Stage of the Day #2567

Here’s Anton and Pearce, sitting on our injured couch and trying to get through one of my Super Mario Maker stages.

Level design is a surprisingly difficult art, and the process of building something fun and interesting takes a lot of thought and iteration, building ideas and scrapping them for new ones. It’s not a skill I”m ever going to master, but it’s fun to dabble in with this game. Creating a good level requires placing yourself in another’s mental state; players will know nothing about what thought went into your design, so you have to build it in a way such that it teaches them as they go.

That is to say: it’s very interesting to watch people play levels I make, since they will miss things I thought were obvious, make mistakes I didn’t expect, take shortcuts that I thought were impossible; my mind creates a shape and theirs digests it by an entirely different process, and the discrepancy is so fascinating.

This particular level, though, was maybe a little cruel. Anton fell off the angry caterpillar onto the spikes below many times before giving up, and that’s entirely my fault. There’s plenty to learn here, as in all things.

Pearce came by for just a few moments tonight between work and rehearsal. He has been keeping busy quite a bit lately, which is not a bad way to be; it was nice to see him, if only for a brief hello.

Laurel stayed home today, letting Zinky take some brave steps into the outdoors, hoping he would burn off some steam. He came back in on his own, napped hard, and so far hasn’t harmed the furniture any further. Perhaps he just needs some freedom to adventure.

Look at our living room, finally coalescing into a real place! We are nearly done with the whole moving ordeal, and tonight I was able to take some time to do some work for Jacob that I’ve been putting off for far too long.

Craft of the Day #2557

Craft of the Day #2557

Anna is visiting California for another wedding. She’s getting a lot of them these days, it seems, but it does mean I get to see her again, so perhaps I should try and convince more of her high school friends to tie the knot.

Life is busy for everyone, so we had only a few hours free today, like last time.

There is another reason for this visit, though, which made it less bright than we would have liked.

We learned last week that Lauren is in the hospital, recovering from a serious medical condition. No one saw it coming, and she is too young to be so hurt. The doctors are giving her the care she needs and she should be fine, but of course we are all going to worry for her until we know that she’s healthy and happy again.

Today we made a care package to send to her: photos and mementos of the time we all spent in Santa Cruz; tasty goodies; collages made in part from the pieces of our old home. Laurel, who has never even had the chance to meet Lauren, spent the afternoon felting an amazing little unicorn for her, complete with rainbow main and tail. I’ll send out the package soon, and I hope it brings Lauren some cheer while she recovers.

Here, also, is the next yearly video, uploaded at the beginning of my eighth year of this project.

It’s been as distinct a chapter as any so far: the conclusion of App Academy, the beginning of my first full-time job and the start of a new career, moving into a new home with Laurel. I’m in a completely different place in life than I was a year ago, more grounded than I’ve ever been. It’s a good thing, but I feel like I’ve lost contact with a lot of friends in the past year – or at least I spend much less time with many of them than I used to.

Life is too busy and I miss everyone. Last year I think I figured out how to subsist; in this next year I want to connect with people again.

Teardown of the Day #2529

Teardown of the Day #2529

Pearce’s and my apartment is almost demolished, now. I took the last of my things from there tonight, throwing away quite a bit of unneeded debris, as well as some old food that went sadly unnoticed at the back of the fridge. As part of the process we took the banner down together – all the doodles and scraps left behind by our friends during our time here.

I have photos of the artwork, but the banner itself will be recycled. It’s important to let things go, and I’m still learning how to do that.

I’ve been working on this move almost constantly for a week and a half. It feels like finals season in college – one more day of work, and then we’re free to rest.
