Developers of the Day #2246

App Academy ended three weeks ago, and on Monday Petry and Matt will start their new jobs. John is sitting on three job offers and my new job will start soon well. We all found something for ourselves so much faster than I expected; it’s nice to see things coming together after all the intensive work we went through.

Matt will be working in Santa Cruz, so I had to call people together for a dinner tonight while we still had him around. Our first time all meeting without code work hanging over our heads, and it was a lovely evening.

This is a composite panoramic shot; the only other way to capture everyone would have been to break out of the moment further and step to the corner of the room. Look closely and you can see the seams, but it does its job well enough. Laurel was on my left as I took this photo; imagine her in your blind spot, perhaps.

I’m so curious about how everyone’s jobs will work out. More on this story as it develops.

Pizza of the Day #2224

Today marked the official end of App Academy, though they’ll still offer a few lectures, and advice whenever we need it. Employers came to talk to us, and to check out our creations, and for an hour or two the class was loud and buzzing with business talk.

Tonight didn’t quite have the kick that our Final Project Day did, since we haven’t really finished the ultimate goal of the course – finding ourselves snazzy new careers – so our celebration was a more mild thing. I went along with a few for pizzas, though I’m sure other little parties took place as well.

These are great people, and this whole thing has been a fantastic experience. I won’t feel done until I’ve started the next thing, and then that won’t be done for quite a long time – so it goes. Always something new today, which is the way we like it to be.

man, it’s so loud in here

Shoot of the Day #2217

Yuriy brought some substantial photography equipment to App Academy today, offering to take headshots of any students who wanted one. He did a great job of it, directing everyone to make all the necessary minor adjustments to posture and expression, asking them the names of loved ones to summon smiles. While he stood on the ladder, bearing the heavy lens, other students held the soft boxes that would provide the perfect lighting, turning our slightly dingy office into a real studio.

When we’re all through with this, hopefully I can do some more shooting with Yuriy – I’ve never given studio photography a real chance.

Crossing of the Day #2216

We went out to a Rails meetup tonight – one of many gatherings where masters of code share techniques and philosophies from their craft. It was a long walk from the Academy, and a spontaneous decision to go, but the streets are full of lights and the night was welcoming.

We’ll all find some solid ground very soon. It’ll happen.

Prep of the Day #2209

The full-on-intensive-bootcamp restrictions of App Academy have lightened, so we chose to work at Anna’s house today instead of on campus. She has a lovely little home, filled with plants and musical instruments and all manner of crafted things, and just outside her living room you can hear crowds of birds calling out to each other.

We continued our whiteboard tests with grease pencil and giant sticky notes. Explaining your thought process as you work out a problem in the stress of a job interview may be tough, so it’s important to keep this going as long as we can.

I made a few more applications today. I wonder how many of them will just sink into the void, and how many will be read. It’s good to have company for all this.

Exercise of the Day #2207

Exercise of the Day #2207

Our first Ruby projects, nine weeks past, seem unfathomably distant now, and when we shifted gears into the web development curriculum, some of our old skills started to fade. While we’re doing our job hunts, then, we’re also asked to pair up for these whiteboarding sessions: one student pretends to be an employer, while the other is a hopeful employee, demonstrating their thought process when challenged with a code puzzle.

We are expected to apply to a prodigious number of companies this week; we are also expected to expect a lot of rejections. We will steel ourselves and forge forwards, and in time find ourselves somewhere better.

Cadre of the Day #2203

We showed off our final projects today – the culmination of nine weeks of dedicating ourselves to a new craft. I come to this program with a little programming experience, but others had never cone any coding before they began this, and everyone came out with something spectacular.

It’s only been nine weeks, but it really does feel like so much has happened in the interim – and you really do build up such a sense of solidarity with everyone else going through the same intensive program.

By the end of the day we were all worn out, of course, but this has all been great – let these next few weeks continue on the same course.
