Finale of the Day #2140

As of today I have officially left the lab, off to pursue other things in the City. Dan has done the same, though he’s already found his place in Industry. Lab folk who were available came out to eat together tonight – one last gathering before Dan and I vanish. Food and conversation were good, dreams and books and peculiar things, and everyone offered hugs as we parted; it was a nice way to end my time with them.

I’ve been working there for about a year and a half now, and I’ve seen several researchers and RAs go and new ones come to take their places. Labs like these are an endless fountain of thoughtful people, always changing; it gives life a strange ephemeral feeling that is probably more common than I realize.

Everyone here is brilliant, and their lives are going to be remarkable, and it was lovely to be a part of that for a while.

Sam held a housewarming party today, inviting his friends and colleagues, and with barbecue and bonfire I think we left his new home well-warmed. The party began, as these parties often do, with people sticking to their familiar circles, but as time went on we came together more and more.

Before night fell I mostly kept close to Simon, Dan and Consuelo here. I like them quite a bit – I’ll miss them when I go.

Lunch of the Day #2124

A rare lunch with some of the lab at the delicious Sliver, whose pizza philosophy follows that of the legendary Cheeseboard. Nik, at the top left, left the lab a few months ago to continue on with life, but his visit today sparked plenty of conversation.

Everyone’s so busy when we’re working – it’s nice to get out for moments like these.

Scientists of the Day #2123

Another scan session tonight – one of only a handful remaining before I leave the lab. Simon is learning, and though Alan started working with the scanner only in the last few months, it seems he’s comfortable with all the complexities of the process now.

There’s a lot of downtime during these sessions – a good opportunity to talk. I’ve learned more about how people work from these conversations than from the MRI’s data, I think.

Photo of the Day #2111

This is my last month at the lab, so I’d like to get some photographs of all the researchers before I go. Some of the work the lab is doing is private, so I can’t go into too much detail here, but I want something to remember everyone by.

Front and center is Simon, who came from Belgium to join our lab as a Master’s student last year. Our unexpected second subject in the back is Alan, who just completed his first year as a PhD student. This last month will be busy, so I’ll have to make the most of my time working with them.

You start to look back at a place before you even leave it. It’s a strange feeling.
